Summary

Since ancient times, Garut has had a typical product of Tenun Ikat, but it was going into extinction due to the lack of proper management where the sales were not growing.

Hendar Rogesta, as the son of a weaver, is trying to revive Tenun Garut by importing raw materials and empowering the local people of Kampung Panawuan District Garut, who were originally unemployed, farmers and teenagers, and dropped out as craftsmen of weaving and tailors. He helps market the fabric so that the weaving products can keep on growing.

Innovation

Paguyuban Kampung Tenun, founded and headed by Hendar Rogesta, cooperates with PGN (Perusahaan Gas Negara) and CTI (Cita Tenun Indonesia).

They conduct business management of Tenun Garut by importing silk raw material from China, empowering up to 106 local people as craftsmen and tailors. They help connect with the designers in terms of updated fashion models, and develop Tenun products into a variety of products, such as: Tenun Ikat, Tenun Bulu and also produce Tenun for fashion and interior craft, as well as marketing the results across the country and abroad.

Empowering People Through Paguyuban Kampung Tenun Garut

Inspiration

Hendar Rogesta, as founder Paguyuban Kampung Tenun, has a vision that Tenun Garut does not go into extinction, and further, Kampung Panawuan has a superior product so Tenun is advanced as an icon of Garut.

Overall impact

With the Paguyuban Kampung Tenun, currently Tenun Garut exists and the villagers of Panawuan grow by working as craftsmen of weaving and tailors. Tenun Garut is widely known in Indonesia, and the product is even known to foreign countries.

Through cooperation with CTI, PGN and several fashion partners always present Tenun Garut in national events such as Inacraft and International events such as Spring Cultural Event, Indonesian Cultural Night and other fashion exhibitions in Beijing, Tokyo, London, US, Myanmar and Malaysia.

Business benefit

The Innovation of Hendar is that now "Tenun Garut" becomes popular and developed into many choices of more diverse products (growing into various kinds) so that Tenun Garut sales become a bestseller all over the country.

With the result of these efforts, local people who work as weavers and tailors, who were previously unemployed, now can get a steady income. Farmers with less income and people who dropped out of school can now earn much better incomes.

Social and environmental benefit

• Income increase for paguyuban, weaving craftsmen, as well as tailors

• Improving the quality of education of the local people who dropped out of school because they earned income and went back to school through the Paket Kejar Paket Program (Home schooling program)

• Social impacts on other effects as Kampung Panawuan becomes crowded by tourists who buy Tenun

• Share income set aside from the income of Paguyuban for provision or repair of public facilities in Kampung Panawuan, such as musholla, and other public facilities.
