Innovation

The business opportunity arose from "the motivation of the leaders of the cacao producing organizations in western Boyacá to achieve peace in their region through a legal activity that would replace coca cultivation and the exploitation of emeralds". The support they received from the government was essential to achieve their purpose and overcome it. Beyond solving a short-term problem, they made their way, achieving in addition to peace, making a business that is still in force today and with growth projection.

Inspiration

"Jairo Urbano was the founder and coordinator of the efforts of the peasant's associations, who sought to take advantage of the agroforestry conditions of the land to produce fine and aromatic cocoa (not very prone to diseases)". The opening of stores is the final achievement achieved after setting out the purpose of replicating what their entrepreneurs saw in other parts of the world because in addition to producing cocoa they are sellers of their product in their own points, which has allowed them to offer their customers a great experience.

Overall impact

"Ten cocoa organizations were created impacting 1,267 families, which benefited from the production process of cocoa and its derivatives", replacing their illicit cultivation activities with crops that brought them closer to legality, social recognition, and the generation of educational opportunities for the new generations. The impact finally achieved benefits for all those involved in the process from the inhabitants of these lands to the sellers and the entire value chain involved from production to the sale of the product and of course the company, likewise, its clients obtained the offer of a national product in specialized spaces for consumption.

Business benefit

Since its creation, "the company has been financed by some investors, among which Verdor Capital S.A.S stands out, which has promoted the development of new products and process optimization". This support was obtained due to his participation in the renowned Shark Tank program. Likewise, the company benefited from legal and administrative advice from the investor, it has defined areas such as financial, accounting, marketing, and commercial, which allows designing an expansion strategy by opening new points of sale. According to what Nicolas Urbano indicates, "the company plans to open four new stores, two in Bogotá, one in Cali and one in Medellín".

Social and environmental benefit

The National Cocoa Network, made up of 31,000 families nationwide, is the beneficiary of the income generated by Distrito Chocolate, taking into account that it is part of the shareholders' meeting. This network covers the North, South, Andean, and Orinoquía regions of the country.

Between 2003 and 2010, 7,000 hectares of coca were eradicated in western Boyacá, being replaced by cocoa crops, this avoided the potential damage caused to the environment by the spread of chemicals such as glyphosate. In this sense, it is difficult to quantify the environmental impact in the region since this substitution avoids a large number of inconveniences for the land.

"The main innovation of Distrito Chocolate consists of having a mixed and flexible business model that combines public and private investment, through integration with the Red Nacional de Cacao", which is made up of peasants associations motivated by the end of violence that illicit crops brought to Pauna Boyacá for decades.

The inspiration arises from the need to give a radical turn to the violence in Pauna Boyacá from the "Green War" or war for emeralds, as well as to replace the use of the land, which was monopolized by illicit crops, bringing with it to the region not only social stigmatization but also a culture of easy money .
