Summary

CHRISTUS MUGUERZA SISTEMAS HOSPITALARIOS through an innovative and efficient system using digital transformation improved the administrative process and operations within their 11 hospitals in 7 states of Mexico with the objective to become a 100% digital health system. In 2019 the transformation process started in HOSPITAL MUGUERZA SALTILLO. The main objective and masterpiece of all this innovation was to migrate everything to an electronic medical record.

This innovation points directly to ODS number 3 since it improves all the complex processes that exist right now in the health system by providing more safety and quality service to the patient, the medical staff, management and clinical staff. The innovation program that Grupo Muguerza applied to their 11 hospitals is well known as CONECTA SALUD, which consists of an end-to-end digital transformation program from the very first minutes where the patient enters the hospital all the way to discharge.

Innovation

CONECTA SALUD will impact directly the administrative processes of the hospital as it will also impact the way information is seen by the patient at the hospital. Reducing resources such as paper and materials but even more important the regulation of medicines and medical procedures that will have a positive impact on the patient and it will also represent a reduction of cost for the hospital and the patient. Having such innovations can even save lives as we know that the third cause of death in the world is medical errors.

This innovation of digital transformation becomes a great tool in the correct use of medicine and cost-reduction to the hospital by making more efficient their storage, prescription and management processes. This innovation contributes to the UN Sustainable Development goal 12 on responsible production and consumption since the traceability of medical supplies and clinical procedures will cause enormous savings for both the hospital and the patients. Therefore, year after year and by using UNIDOSIS as a tool to administrate medicines, such savings will reflect large benefits for both parties. Unnecessary production of medicines and the correct management of highly polluting biological waste will be part of the benefit of the innovation within GRUPO MUGUERZA.

GRUPO MUGUERZA needed the help of partners to make CONECTA SALUD possible. Some of their strategic partners were PHILLIPS, NEORIS, SAP, DELOITTE, KRONOS and GRUPO ASSA, just by mentioning a few. Ensuring that the technology implemented met the highest quality standards needed by GRUPO MUGUERZA.

The need for a digital transformation in their processes was considered even before the pandemic hit the world. The main objective was to optimize the complex processes that existed by improving the safety in critical care processes, especially to reduce wrong medical prescriptions, mistakes in the identification of the patient and also better control of the procedures carried out within the hospital facilities. Improvement in the quality of health care has gained special relevance in recent years and focuses on the premise of the patient's safety during their stay in the hospital. Preventing mistakes has become a main priority for organizations that seek to achieve excellence in the services provided by them.

Digital Transformation for Health Improvement

Inspiration

By applying CONECTA SALUD to their operation, GRUPO MUGUERZA faces the need to implement a program that carries a level of efficiency in their administrative processes that will be reflected in the full satisfaction of their final customer, which is the patient that uses any of their hospital services throughout Mexico. The system obviously should align and even exceed the quality standards and regulations of national and international entities that regulate medical suppliers.

The arrival of COVID-19 implied speeding up the implementation of these digital transformations to their processes but also a restructuring of the priorities they had before the pandemic hit, thus being able to speed up care and respond to the demands and challenges that the pandemic represents.

The new processes that resulted from the implementation of the digital transformation also benefits employees, strategic partners such as suppliers, medical staff and insurance companies, as well as counselors, government organizations and civil organizations.

Overall impact

At an environmental level, the implementation of the digital innovation reducing the use of unnecessary consumption of paper, is a medium-term bet, since the adoption of such ideas that bring environmental reduction of waste is a strategy that takes time and several stages to cover the entire system such as GRUPO CHRISTUS MUGUERZA SISTEMAS HOSPITALARIOS. As mentioned before, the decrease in the use of paper, the use of toner and waste, without a doubt will have a positive impact on the UN sustainable development goal number 12 which refers to responsible production and consumption.

By applying efficient administrative processes, businesses like GRUPO CHRISTUS MUGUERZA receive benefits and maximize the correct use of resources used for the care and correct attention of patients. It also helps the rational consumption of medical supplies that will generate savings for the patient. Thanks to the savings that these processes bring to the company, employees of the hospital can get an increase in their benefits such as higher salaries among others. Also the hospital itself can receive benefits thanks to the savings.

The financial benefits derived from applying CONECTA SALUD to the GRUPO CHRISTUS MUGUERZA operations open the door to new commercial partners that share their philosophy and business values to achieve mutual cooperation and give a prompt response to the communities where CHRISTUS MUGUERZA hospitals and offices are located. Due to COVID-19 projects like COVIMED, which allowed that by a phone call, customers and patients could receive medical attention, were created. MICROSOFT and DELOITTE helped to make COVIMED a reality by helping GRUPO CHRISTUS MUGUERZA give the attention needed and made COVIMED a great project. It was because of this virtual presence and experience that GRUPO CHRISTUS MUGUERZA was able to achieve international recognition.

Business benefit

At this time in CHRISTUS MUGUERZA HOSPITAL SALTILLO where CONECTA SALUD is working in 100% of the administrative operation, there is a 90-95% reduction of the use of paper contributing to UN goal number 12 that mentions responsible consumption which will represent an important impact in environment. Due to Mexican health regulations, the health files and medical records for Mexican patients cannot be destroyed and should be in the hospital for a certain number of years. However the regular use of paper for new files will present a big decrease in the use which will transfer as a benefit to the hospital and also to the environment. The zero-paper philosophy and trend in many other organizations is a goal to pursue with this innovation supporting UN goal number 12.

Social and environmental benefit

The impact will carry a cultural transformation necessary for the adoption of technological innovations. The entire staff at CHRISTUS MUGUERZA SALTILLO hospital, regardless of their level of contribution - doctor, nurse, employee - was integrated into the digital process and and the new system of CONECTA SALUD. This will translate into a reduction of the inequality gap within the company such as digital illiteracy as well as breaking barriers where each employee understands that each and every member of the CHRISTUS MUGUERZA organization is vital and important for an organization that provides health services to patients. By improving the digital education in all of those involved in the hospital from security guards, cleaning, health team such as doctors, nurses and the management team, are impacting in UN goal number 10 for quality education and goal number 4 that refers to reduction of inequality.

The impact and benefit to the patients is also reflected since the program works through an administration where medicines, medical procedures and each and every single expense can be observed with precision and this will translate into confidence and full satisfaction for the patient. Having such control generates greater confidence.

Innovation through digital programs in administrative processes will optimize and reduce response times, such as faster patient registrations, easier discharge of patients and better control of expenses.
