Summary

PT. Surya Nusantara Sentosa is an automotive services company that focuses on developing the skills of the people they hire. The company began with good intentions as part of its recruitment process. Staff come from rural areas with underprivileged or orphaned backgrounds who took mechanical engineering with an automotive focus as their major. As a result, the company has a highly motivated staff who want a better life and to upgrade their family condition.

Innovation

Bayu came from a professional background, starting his career as commercial director in PT. Michelin Indonesia. After several years of work, he wanted to start a new business and contribute to Indonesia. From the company name, Bayu took “Nusantara” and “Sentosa” as part of his vision to develop the Indonesian society. “Nusantara” is to show that the company is established in Indonesia. “Sentosa” means wealth or prosperity. The owner wants his company to be a tool to reduce poverty in Indonesia. “The equality needs to be created, and the gap needs to be reduced in society,” he explained. Therefore, PT. Surya Nusantara Sentosa, is recruiting the orphans and underprivileged people. “We try to create equal opportunity for our employees and develop their economic condition at the same time,” Bayu added.

Bayu found a training workshop in Malang, East Java, which is managed by Muhammadiyah University and only recruits orphaned and underprivileged Indonesians as their students. PT. Surya Nusantara Sentosa signed a contract with them to provide all the tools the training center needs, and in return, Bayu offers all its graduates jobs with his company.

PT. Surya Nusantara Sentosa’s salaries are 10% higher than the standard minimum salary in Indonesia. In addition, Bayu does not limit the employees’ monthly bonus salary. If they work hard and show job commitment, the bonuses will follow, he maintains. This is an incentive for new school graduates. Not only do they get a job, they get trained before being placed in South Sulawesi. PT. Surya Nusantara Sentosa also provides their staff with the best facility, from the best place to sleep with five-star hotel beds, staff daily meals and scholarships, he claims. The company will cover 50% of tuition if employees want to continue their education to get bachelor’s degrees.

Inspiration

“If you can't do a great thing, you can do a small thing in great ways,” Bayu explained. He wants to run a sustainable business based on good employee recruitment. Not only does this help his business grow, but educating his employees helps their economic status and their lives overall. The company wants their employees to feel they made the right decision to work there and are comfortable and secure financially and physically.

Overall impact

Currently PT. Surya Nusantara Sentosa has 30 employees. Most of them come from Sumatera, Lombok, around Java and Kalimantan. The company’s goals are to give their employees a stable income to provide for their family. By giving the best facility to their employees, the company will make sure they will achieve their individual goals in line with company goals.

There is a story from one of the employees in PT. Surya Nusantara Sentosa. Before he joined the company, he got paid $100 a month which he used to support his mother who works as a launderer. Since joining PT. Surya Nusatara Sentosa, he has been paid well enough so he can support his family and asked his mother to quit her job.

Business benefit

Since the bonuses are unlimited, the employees put their passion and hard work into their jobs and it’s paying off. At the beginning of the year, PT. Surya Nusantara Sentosa was rewarded by PT. Hadji Kalla (Kalla Toyota) as The Fastest Growth Partnership and became one of the partnerships that helped Hadji Kalla to fulfill their revenue target in 2017. In the six-month partnership, PT. Surya Nusantara Sentosa has produced the same revenue as the other existing partners which have been with Kaplan Toyota for the past five to seven years.

The company started the business by opening 10 branches in Sulawesi in the first six months of the year and plans to expand up to 13 branches. Bayu claims that the profit he earned, at a minimum, is three times his previous salary as commercial director in PT. Michelin Indonesia. The revenue of this business is up to approximately $80,000 a month.

Social and environmental benefit

Currently, two employees got the scholarship from the company to continue their higher education. Bayu has a vision that he can help his employees help themselves and the company. He hopes his employees will work with him up to five years, learn about entrepreneurships and eventually be trained to become their own entrepreneurs and open their own company in their place of origin. With this, he hopes to create a cycle of training and releasing talented employees who will be replaced by others who will follow the same pattern. PT. Surya Nusantara Sentosa can benefit society by creating new jobs in the area. Bayu wants to build the company so it can simultaneously flourish and be profitable and sustainable.
