Summary

The innovation proposed is costocking. Jestocke.com proposed a rent service of goods between people and insurance . It also creates a relationship between owners, one that has space and a tenant that is looking for some for a place to store something at a particular price.

Innovation

Is it still necessary to convince people of the virtues of the collaborative economy? Driven by the rise of new technologies, this is already strongly rooted in our consumer habits. More than 75% of French people have already bought or rented a good or service from an individual on the Internet, and more than 70% of them have already put on the seller's costume (Observatoire de l'Économie Collaborative 2014, A Little/Ifop). In the eyes of the French, the advantages are very real, starting with an increase in purchasing power for 74% of them. Proximity, friendliness, and respect for the environment are also highly appreciated. All these qualities are found in the storage between individuals on jestocke.com.

Negotiation from one person to another disrupts consumption, far beyond simply increasing purchasing power. The desire to consume in a more responsible way: this is the great revolution. Storage between private individuals contributes to this. By promoting unused or unoccupied premises, cost storage actively contributes to the fight against urban sprawl and space consumption, an issue of concern that legislation has recently addressed. Making better use of existing buildings (cellars, granaries, sheds, etc.) means avoiding the construction of self storage centres on natural and agricultural areas on the outskirts of urban areas. A real plus for the environment, as is the rental of a box at the bottom of the house, which limits travel. Greener, the costing is also more user-friendly. The human contacts established around the rental of a storage facility strengthen local ties, in a spirit of mutual assistance that often goes beyond the scope of the transaction.

Costockage in Colaborative Economy

Inspiration

Jestocke.com is a start-up created in 2013 by Laure Courty, an entrepreneurial mom who is not afraid of work. The principle is simple, offering the possibility to users to be able to store their goods with particular owners who have vacant space.

This idea came to her when moving from the Paris region to Bordeaux, she quickly realized that a move often led to storage problems.

The property and furniture that we have in our former home sometimes find no place in their new home, and some have some sentimental value, or financial.

This model is more and more present in France and many start-ups are embarking on the adventure of the collaborative economy.

The collaborative economy is an economy that we call peer-to-peer. Through digital networking platforms, individuals can exchange goods (car, housing), and services (assistance to individuals, carpooling, private lessons) in return for remuneration.

This new model is upsetting the codes of the traditional economy. Indeed, it offers the possibility to its followers to be able to exchange between them while benefiting from certain guarantees (insurance, follow-up ...) offered by a secure platform on line and a customer service.

Overall impact

This innovation makes it possible to store and therefore save space and use free spaces (garages, cellars, etc.).

On Jestocke.com you can find any type of space, from the small cellar in the city centre to the warehouse of more than 2000 m2 and the uninhabited secondary house, the offer is defined by the users, space owners. They can post their ad for free and benefit from an efficient rental service that they can manage from their computer. Owners also benefit from a follow-up of their rentals by a responsive and attentive customer service.

They are informed of the slightest activity concerning their storage space, the people interested, the rents collected, or the follow-up of their current rentals.

Some landlords earn land income to reimburse their daily expenses (telephone and Internet subscription, EDF invoice, or loan in progress).

They offer their owner-customers to rent their space on the platform, and the rentals are entirely managed by jestocke. From making appointments to taking rents and taking them out of storage, jestocke takes care of everything. So there are two types of business at Jestocke.com, a B to B part and a C to C part.

Business benefit

The innovation of Jestocke.com is the costocking, this service can exist thanks to the digital revolution that we are living. Those services are called the the collaborative economy, there is many services who are based on this model like blablacar or Airbnb. This service consist on linking individuals for stocking goods, for a certain reason like moves, at other individuals.

For Jestocke.com, this innovation is a real market to take because the price of stocking surfaces is increasing. Three million people move every year, some of them move to a smaller home and have not enough room to put their furniture. Because of it, the innovation of Jestocke.com is a real advantages for those people, who can store their furniture in somebody else house or garage. It allows them to provide a good place to put their furniture for a good price and most of the time not so far to their house. The market of storage is increasing year after year with the urbanization; there is less and less space for people who want to live in big town like Paris or Bordeaux. The collaborative economy is a proven economic model, many great company became very famous with this model and made many benefits. The fact of giving to individuals the possibility to meet some other individuals who can answer to their demand is becoming more and more common. With this model, Jestocke.com reached many customers in France and recently in Belgium.

The objectives of Jestocke.com is to get more and more storage spaces on his website to propose to the tenants the best offer they could get and for the best price. Later, Jestocke.com would like to open websites and provides service in many European countries, to become the leader of self storage.

Social and environmental benefit

Co-locating benefits the society as well as carpooling. This is part of the collaborative economy between individuals. In addition, this principle contributes to the management of bulky objects rather than their destruction. Thus, this affordable and universally accessible solution promotes both meetings and mobility, particularly in rural areas.

The challenges of rapid urbanization, such as the safe removal and management of solid waste in cities, can be overcome by enabling cities to continue to thrive and grow, while optimizing the use of resources and reducing pollution and poverty. Trading from individual to individual disrupts consumption, far beyond the mere gain in purchasing power : it matches with the desire to consume in a more responsible way.
