Summary

=========================================================

Ecotourism has as its main objective to carry out recreational activities in direct contact with nature, but it also seeks to improve the well-being of its communities and promote the care of flora and fauna. Colombia is recognized worldwide for having one of the largest biodiversities in the world, according to Colombia's Biodiversity Information System (SIB), the country has about 56,343 species registered. Colombia has the greatest number of birds and orchids in the world and the second country with the highest number of plants, amphibians, and butterflies, therefore, it has great potential to develop this business responsibly.

However, ecological tourism must meet many more objectives such as giving value to natural resources, contributing to the preservation of the place, educating tourists and communities so that no environmental damage is generated.

REFUGIO VIDA NATIVA joins this initiative being the pioneer in the municipality of Firavitova promoting ecotourism, environmental conservation, and native heritage

Innovation

===========================================================

The innovation of REFUGIO VIDA NATIVA is its business model, through which a unique experience is offered to its visitors by providing accommodation in native cabins or camping areas with a campfire, surrounded by ecological gardens and large areas of typical cold climate vegetation. During the stay, guests receive a healthy diet with traditional cuisine based on organic products grown within the refuge, in addition, they have ecotourism plans that include tours of historical sites in the region where they can learn about various ecosystems, landscapes, archaeological remains of ancient ancestral cultures and peoples preserved with colonial architecture.

Recently, REFUGIO VIDA NATIVA integrated an environmental school where visitors share and exchange knowledge that will allow them after their visit to lead a more sustainable life by implementing agroecology, bio-construction, healthy eating, reforestation, use of medicinal plants, and caring for the environment; With this, they have managed to develop and incorporate technology and innovation into the business model, among which we can highlight the implementation of a natural irrigation system for self-supply of the refuge, efficiently using the water resources they have and being a model of innovation in the region. As Mrs. Virgelina tells us, “it is about using the land well and awakening to all who visit us the love for the land”.

Conservando Nuestras Raíces Con El Ecoturismo/Conservating Ours Roots With The Eco-Tourism

Inspiration

===========================================================

Virgelina after 25 years of dedicating herself to pedagogy and being based in one of the great

town of Colombia she decided together with her husband to return to her roots, to the department of Boyacá known as the land of peace and freedom, a place that captivates tourists with ecological attractions and colonial architecture. The municipality of Firavitoba is the magical place that saw her born when she found herself with this place she wanted to "play with the earth" (that's how she calls the action of sowing and harvesting food), she was not alien to the activity of sowing because, Throughout her career as a primary school teacher, she taught her students to sow in the small makeshift gardens of the schools.

In principle his objective was to plant and harvest food for his family's consumption, after many tests and verifying that this land was fertile and that this ancestral knowledge should transcend future generations, he wanted to unite his two passions, pedagogy and sowing, For this reason, together with his family, they devised a sustainable experience through an ecological lodging and an environmental school that seeks to raise awareness about the environment and transfers knowledge to its guests, turning them into guardians of seeds.

Overall impact

========================================================

The strategy of REFUGIO VIDA NATIVA is to recover food security through a clean agricultural production of transgenics, making the community recover its ancestral customs of practicing traditional agriculture with healthy food, grown without chemicals, enough for self-sufficiency and commercialization in local places at a fair price, contributing positively to the nonuse of herbicides and fertilizers, reducing the impacts on soil, water, flora, and fauna, which according to the last 15 years have increased in Colombia due to the use of chemicals in 95 % of agricultural crops and thus allowing responsible production and consumption.

REFUGIO VIDA NATIVA is the main promoter of agricultural self-sustenance, allowing traditional production and healthy food, aimed at attacking hunger in all its forms since Boyacá currently has mortality from malnutrition in children under 5 years of 3.8 per 100,000 children and the goal for 2030 will be 0.4.

On the other hand, with the incorporation of the environmental school, it helps that all visitors have the relevant information and knowledge for sustainable development, generating quality education and sensitizing people to take care of the environment, in this way Ms. Virgelina takes advantage of ecological tourism to promote culture and local products as she says it herself. "Here everyone comes out as caretakers of the land and we old men" referring to their contribution to the conservation of native heritage, promoting the sustainable use of local ecosystems, preventing land degradation and misuse, and supporting the increase and conservation of biological diversity of the department of Boyaca.

This initiative empowers everyone in the municipality of Firavitoba, allowing the establishment of a sustainable community that contributes to the conservation of native heritage through ecotourism and environmental education with ecological tours teaching health and nature care.

The refuge incorporates water collection systems that allow parts of its supply, such as the collection of rainwater and specialized collection systems, this allows to reduce the use of drinking water for activities that do not require it and support that more people can access safe drinking water, this is a great benefit to the community.

Social and environmental benefit

The use of GMOs in the world does not help ensure healthy and diverse eating. Commercially, the industry has concentrated on the production of four crops: soybeans, maize, cotton, and canola, which occupy 99% of the areas planted. These crops have increased the use of herbicides which are toxic and cause contamination of water sources and soil also affects the health of rural populations.

Peasant, Family, and Community Agriculture has proven to be more efficient and sustainable than industrial agriculture, providing more than 70% of food in just 19% of the country's agricultural area. Today, more than before, the crisis that generated the pandemic, highlighted the need to guarantee food sovereignty.

The peasants have preserved Creole seeds in their territories that are the basis of their culture, their production, and sustainment for their food, REFUGIO VIDA NATIVA precisely seeks to preserve 200 native seeds.

The department of Boyacá is one of the main food producers in Colombia, being the second agricultural pantry in the country, producing and mobilizing about 6 million tons per year and one of the main departments in promoting ecological tourism, REFUGIO VIDA NATIVA allows the conservation of native heritage through ecotourism and environmental education, creating a sustainable ecosystem that allows the conservation of the heritage and culture of the Boyacá territory in Colombia. The VIDA NATIVA REFUGE, thanks to the conservation of native and ancestral seeds that are passed from generation to generation, have allowed the continuation of the production of 100% organic food and with the continuity of the agricultural tradition of the municipality of Firavitoba, they have been a main actor in the supply to the local community of these seeds.

They have dedicated themselves to the development and care of organic crops which allow them a healthy diet with traditional cuisine based on organic products grown in the refuge, supplying the town and its visitors, these foods are grown and harvested with techniques such as the production of fertilizers solid organic substances, agroecology, bioproduction, conservation and efficient management of water and technical and sustainable management of beekeeping projects, allowing the REFUGIO VIDA NATIVA to be free of any chemical agent in its processes, the refuge has been in charge of structuring and documenting these techniques with the main objective of being transmitted to the local community, to national and foreign tourists who visit the municipality of Firavitoba through environmental education, thus contributing to the generation of collective environmental awareness and rescuing ancestral knowledge of the regions.

The refuge has promoted ecotourism, environmental conservation, and native heritage, being pioneers in the municipality.

===========================================================

The impact generated by mass tourism in the host communities contributes to the deterioration of biodiversity and the environment, is reflected in the increase in deforestation, the overcrowding of ecological food areas, and the modification or destruction of flora and fauna habitats, terrestrial and aquatic. It also generates an overuse of water resources and problems due to having to manage a greater amount of waste. All of the above and many other problems that deteriorate the sustainability of the planet and are part of the negative impacts of the tourism business are the reason for the existence of REFUGIO VIDA NATIVA where inspiring ecological tourism is carried out that contributes to the sustainable development of the planet.
