Summary

This project is about helping schools in rural entities, by giving them a technological solution to help them with their education.

It consists in the installation of a system that may measure the progress of the children and the teachers. Telefonica not only installs the system, but also trains the school members so they know how to use it and be benefited by it. This project seeks to digitally include children and teachers.

This project tries to customize the processes of education in environments that are very vulnerable and that have social deficiencies. It tries to involve the teacher and children in an efficient teaching process.

The system keeps daily records of classroom chores and children's progresses, this way the teachers can evaluate if someone needs more help in any subject or if someone has any troubles. This follow-up methodology helps to know the progress of a group in a basic education classroom in Mexico.

Innovation

It is a project that seeks to digitally include children and teachers. It is a project that is trying to customize the processes of education, as a natural process for many sectors, and in the specific case of environments that are vulnerable by social deficiencies, these innovation mechanisms allow you through technological platforms of training the teacher, to look at or influence that teaching/learning relationship that the teacher and the child have. What they are doing is intervening with a technological solution, with accompanying solutions, a process that has always been given in the classroom, but thanks to innovation you can intervene so that a teacher, for example, knows what to do in a classroom in terms of the math level of the students. This technology platform keeps daily records of classroom chores and children's progress. When there was no technology or thought of innovation, these processes were given naturally. What happened was a teacher could through other procedures know how his students were doing, but, thanks to educational innovation this process is much faster, with a follow-up methodology and encompassing more children. It is knowing how a group is progressing in a basic education classroom of a school in Mexico.

Connectivity for Education

Inspiration

Fundacion Telefonica has been working with a program named ProFuturo, that gives children opportunities to improve the quality of life of children in vulnerable situations, through education and technology.

The main inspiration has been to help children learn in schools and get them out of the streets, that’s why they focus all their attention in giving schools the best technology.

For this specific education project McKinsey, Fundación Telefónica and Fundación Bancaria La Caixa participated. This project was co-designed with J-PAL, a very important institution of measurement in social interventions,

Another inspiration is to be in all the 14 countries that Telefonica has presence in, so it can reach as many schools as possible, to help as many children as possible, working directly with the government.

Overall impact

Telefonica has great concerns about the social, educational and technological gap between the people in this century.

Due to the singularities of the century, characterized by the continuous and rapid transformation that is taking place nowadays, this gap may be bigger as the time comes by.

This gap may arise in so many problems such as safety, health and education, that’s why Telefonica wanted to look at the social side of the digital age and wanted to help those who are staying out of this progress.

The impact of this project is that children will have access or will be part of this knowledge and technological revolution so they won’t get behind everyone else and they could get a chance to find a decent job, progress, stay out of trouble and be happy.

Business benefit

This project helps schools to be digitalized and to have better processes. This is achieved because Telefonica installs the network in the community so the school can have access to Internet and use this system.

By installing the network, it generates sales to the company because other people now may have access to cellphones and to Internet. So it’s a win win, people get to be connected, schools improve their systems and methods, and Telefonica gains more clients.

The innovation also helps to train others and to multiply experiences in digital platforms.

Social and environmental benefit

It helps children to get better education, teachers to measure the children’s progress, the school to have a digital network and society to connect and to have better communication

Fundación Telefónica works primarily to accomplish the sustainable development goal number 4 which is: quality education.

It brings quality education for as many people as possible. By 2020 its goal is to give quality education to more than 10 million children in the world
