Commvault UN Goal #12

Inspiration

According to CommVault's website, the information and communication technology industry overtook the aviation industry for total annual CO2 emissions back in 2013. As the amount of data available continues to grow so does the emissions unless a more efficient solution is found.

Commvault’s CEO Sanjay Mirchandani was recently quoted as saying, “If you’re inside of an organization, and you’re on point to manage data for an organization in the sense that you truly have to protect that information. When I say protect I mean things like natural disasters, ransomware, things like that, that can really turn your business operations upside down. Are you protected? And when I say manage I mean, are you compliant amongst multiple jurisdictions? And third are you using the information? Are you gaining value from it? That’s the business we’re in. As our customers migrate into the world of cloud, more specifically multi cloud there is the risk that data gets fragmented. This acquisition, Hedvig, brings storage technology in the software form and truly integrated with our data management capability. We will provide our customers the next wave of solutions that will truly help.”

Overall impact

In the short term, the simplification of Commvault’s data storage system will increase efficiency and reduce the amount of CO2 emitted. For the employees, they will become more mindful of their individual impact on the environment. In the long term, this innovation will maximize the company’s efficiency as well as reduce the company’s carbon footprint.

Business benefit

Through the simplification of its data storage system, Commvault is able to increase efficiency within its business. This innovation allows Commvault to become more competitive in the market and potentially gain market share. The company hopes that this innovation will accelerate growth to double digits after years of flat growth.

Social and environmental benefit

Commvault is taking the lead in being thoughtful of how data centers are contributing to climate change. If the company is able to find an effective solution, it is very likely that others will follow. The information and communication technology industry overtook the aviation industry for total annual CO2 emissions back in 2013. As the amount of data available continues to grow so does the emissions unless a more efficient solution is found.
