Summary

A bio-fertilizer is a natural source fertilizer which, when is applied to seeds or soils, promotes the health and growth of the crop by increasing the availability of nutrients as nitrogen and phosphorus. The biofertilizer obtained might complement the use of synthetic fertilizers.

Innovation

The bio-fertilizers have been around for years and used in traditional agriculture practices, the natural sources from these fertilizers do not present the same effectiveness compared to our bio-fertilizer development.

Inspiration

Sustainability projects represent an additional challenge besides technical and economical feasibility. Sustainability projects need to meet the demands of reducing greenhouse gases emissions, reduce soil contamination compared to conventional processes and be less water and energy intensive, in order to accomplish climate change targets.

Overall impact

The main and most value positive impact is the reduction of greenhouse gases, soil depletion, the decreasing of contamination of water bodies (eutrophication), and not affecting human health in its use. There is not any negative impact in the use of bio-fertilizers.

Business benefit

A bio-fertilizer can be applied to organic or non-organic crops and has the same performance in both of them. Organic crops have a higher market price than non-organic, increasing product portfolio in Univex and adding revenues to the company.

Social and environmental benefit

A good benefit regarding the use of this biofertilizer is that farmers can use the soil many more times in comparison with the use of conventional fertilizer. It improves a lot the crop yield, helping to comply with the increasing food demand and also increasing the economic situation of farmers families. A less amount of fertilizer is needed, reducing storage time and space.
