Summary

GAMMA addresses 4 out of the 17 UN global goals for sustainable development: good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality and economic growth. Even though GAMMA is a medium sized company, its policies are advanced, especially regarding the management of human resources. These strategies involve: internal mobilization, adaptability, KPI to define employees’ performance, flexible working hours, nursery school available for employees, majority of women in the business, smart-working and lean production. The combination of all these management methods result in a set of strategies that ensure the well-being of the employees - a real innovation.

Innovation

The well-being of both the company and the employees go hand in hand, especially with the internal mobilization that keeps the knowledge within the company by promoting career advancement: employees that start working in production and are promoted to a superior level (office) have a complete vision of the process of the company and transversal skills that can be used to better the product and the company itself. This contributes to a strong sense of adaptability within the company. To meet the needs of the employees (the majority of whom are women) not only the company adopts flexible working hours policies, but it also provides a free nursery school for all employees. Unlike many companies that adopted the use of smart-working only after the pandemic, GAMMA was already using this type of flexible work and it’s now implementing its use also as a part of a sustainability program. Lastly, one of the most important clients of GAMMA is now Dyson which favored the implementation of the lean production system to erase the waste in every sector of the company and improve its efficiency.

Another important initiative promoted by GAMMA that involves the whole community is the “Festa dell’albero” which is a celebration of the territory and especially the city of Bobbio, where the company is based. It’s a very important celebration for the community, especially for the schools because they have the honor of planting young trees; in fact, the slogan is, “a celebration of the children that like trees grow if they have strong roots, a favorable environment and if the right help is given.” Since the first edition, over 5000 new trees have been planted. Another initiative that has been carried out is the development of a new way of reusing waste materials and the use of renewable energy thanks to the photovoltaic system.

Be local, be global

Inspiration

The inspiration for these innovations come from the vision of the founder, Marco Labirio, in a view of respect for the environment and employees’ lives outside the company. Some of the most common slogans from the company are: “a disposizione” which means to be available in every situation for the well-being of the whole company and “non cercare colpevoli ma soluzioni”, which means to not focus on looking for a culprit but rather to look for solutions when facing a problem. But the company is always ready to take inspiration from other great innovations around the world. In fact, one of the most important innovations derived from one of the main clients of GAMMA, Dyson, that pushed them to develop a new type of production (lean production), with a consequent improvement of an already existent attention to the employees.

Overall impact

The main goal of this innovation is to improve the well-being of the employees. In fact, all of these policies are aimed at the betterment of the comfort and every-day life of employees in order to enhance production and efficiency of the company itself.

Business benefit

For the health of the company it’s important that everyone feels a part of it, and this is shown by the adaptability of the employees that are always available to hold any position in the company when necessary. Thanks to the attention given to employees, everyone is always ready to help in times of need; the company has grown and the business can now focus of finding new ways to be sustainable and ethical.

Social and environmental benefit

GAMMA also takes care of its own city by planting trees during the “Festa dell’albero” and by looking after the surrounding environment thanks to gardeners hired by the company.

The importance of being local, the attention dedicated to the city of Bobbio, its environment and its citizens are the heart of this company. All these elements make GAMMA a global model from which other companies must take inspiration. As GAMMA demonstrates, being local is the key factor for global success. So, BE LOCAL, BE GLOBAL!
