Innovation

The Story of Bavish goes back to 1999 when Mr. Baylon Gomes began committing his time and assets to make more noteworthy mindfulness about the significance of segregation of waste at source in his Village of Arossim Goa India. Their work is related to domestic waste and disaster management. They see this as a business opportunity to create solutions that create employment opportunities and keep the state of Goa clean.

He was inspired by his friend's efforts, Mr. Clinton Vaz, who was a notable name in Goa's waste development distribution network, working with districts, instructive organizations, and people to help decrease the mounting garbage issue. Earlier, Mr. Gomes worked part-time to help in his friend’s project. Still, upon seeing the deteriorating condition of landfills and waste management in Goa, he could not wait and decided to go full ahead with the launch of Bavish. They created a recycling station to provide corporates with solutions to use their CSR budgets, assist the Government, and create a collection hub for segregated waste.

In its own unique way, Bavish collects dry waste from 160 Village Panchayats and over 460 schools covering Goa's entire state. Bavish also collects waste from homes and commercial establishments. They are the official partners for the Swedish company Tetra Pak to collect all Tetra Pak waste generated in the State of Goa. Detailed segregation of waste is Bavish’s strength, and they can confidently state that they are a ZERO garbage burning and ZERO landfill company.

Bavishya : The Future

Inspiration

Mr. Gomes was extremely worried about the garbage disposal strategies, which primarily comprised of burning the waste. He stated that "I had to through near 7 years battling the public authority organizations, attempting to consider them liable which is why I chose to begin Bavish after guidance from Mr. Vaz". He considers Mr. Vaz’s contribution as one of the most noticeable impacts that helped him take up this activity.

Bavish has influenced many individuals to contribute, for instance, Mr. Vince Costa, another friend of Mr. Gomes, who offered to pay for the collection vehicles. Later, in the wake of seeing the work done by Mr. Gomes, the pollution Control Board contacted him and approached him to ask to bid for the waste collection tender.

This story is a downright example of The Domino Effect, where one individual's activity influenced another, and a progression of lucky occasions followed.

Overall impact

His business's drive had taught and persuaded thousands of people to segregate their waste and search for areas where they can proceed to give their segregated waste and avoid burning it. His underlying strides towards demanding his employees to replace the disposable cups at work with the ceramic cups, which their workers conveyed in the long run, proceeded to turn into a broadly utilized practice at various workplaces.

The fundamental rationale was to build the mindfulness for a circular economy: reduce, reuse, and recycle, one of the huge effects that have been drilled among the majority. He also shared a model where around 450 schools used to dump their waste in sewage or the field have become more mindful and capable concerning their waste disposal practices.

Various Government and Non-Government organizations have approached him after identifying his outstanding work. Multinational Companies based outside Goa, an organization situated in Gujarat, which was 100 times the size of his company, have also approached him to collaborate. He recalls occasions where he was drawn by Word Bank Rural Agencies and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for delivering talks on value addition, waste management, and consultation to young entrepreneurs.

Business benefit

The process of waste management carried out by Bavish successfully manages to convert garbage to biofuel and other useful products. Firstly, the waste is taken to a rendering plant where it is put into a pre breaker and cut into small pieces, which are then put into a cooker where the fat is separated from the waste matter. This fat is extracted and converted into tallow, which is used to make biofuel. The matter separated is further pressed and hammered into powder, which is used to make by-products for poultry feed, chicken feed, fish meal, and various other products.

The revenue is generated through the tallow and matter when sold to various biofuel companies and agricultural firms. There has been a gradual increase in the number of collaborations with corporates such as Taj Hotels, Club Mahindra, Central Court hotels, Kolva Resorts, Bisleri, etc., due to their focus on the constant enhancement of quality.

Social and environmental benefit

The significant impact his business had was first observed in his locality. The waste burnt by households diminished by almost 90% compared to 1999 in his town. The business also focussed on 450 schools that used to dump their waste in sewage and behind the fields, who now have become more mindful and capable concerning their waste disposal practices.

The business also encouraged to develop a dress code for all the rag pickers and the employees working in waste chain management. They have also focused on changing society's perception in terms of the employees working in waste chain management. Their business has helped employees working in waste chain management to get respect and dignity.
