Summary

The indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides for agricultural use causes the mass death of bees, since farmers apply these pesticides on their crops and the product remains on the leaves of the plants, the bees collect it and take it to the hives. This is generating the loss of approximately 16 thousand hives in different regions of the country per year, seriously affecting the biodiversity of forest ecosystems and the environmental balance, taking into account that bees are responsible for pollination. 90% of the flowers receive help from some kind of pollinating animal species, according to information provided by the Colombian Agricultural Institute-ICA.

In addition, another great challenge is to combat the counterfeiting and adulteration of honey and its derived products, since they represent 80% of the national demand. This affects the competitiveness of the market compared to that of imported honeys, because currently a kilo of honey produced in Colombia is marketed between 11,000 and 25,000 pesos, while an imported one is sold at 8,000 pesos, according to data from the Production Chain of Bees and Beekeeping, as reported by Fedeabejas.

"Without bees there is no food, so we must protect them."

==============================================================

Innovation

The innovation of Bi Abejas is not only in the marketing of honey and their by-products, but in the process, alliances formed with vulnerable communities, as are women heads of family, victims of armed conflict, afro-descendant populations and peasants in territories that have been affected by environmental damage, or that are located far away and may struggle to market their products, finding in beekeeping an alternative to improve their living conditions.

Bi Abejas sells raw honeys, this means that they have not had any industrial transformation process; no chemicals, no artificial flavors, that is, from the honeycomb to the jar, always guaranteeing the best for the health of consumers with competitive and affordable prices for any type of population, since it has a nationwide distribution chain.

Bi Abejas honeys have a cataloguing process which allows it to offer 3 great types:

Forest Multifloral Honeys: "They are honeys that have been obtained by bees when visiting different flowers and plants in their environment. The color and flavor varies according to the type of forest and vegetation in which our friends live.”

Mono-Floral Honeys: “They are honeys that have a preponderance of a specific flower or plant, that is, almost all honey has been made with nectar from a single type of flower or plant. This results in a very special flavor and color.”

Prepared Honeys: "They are honeys that we have mixed with other ingredients or we have carried out some process to obtain new and exciting flavors. We develop these products in collaboration with chefs, restaurants and other ventures.”

"At Bi Abejas we are committed to taking care of nature, bees and the people who are part of our hive.”

=============================================================

A sweet way to contribute to the environment and society / Una Dulce Forma De Contribuir Al Medio Ambiente Y A La Sociedad

Inspiration

It all started with an investigation of collaborative architectures, where the best example and the most interesting was the bee hives. It became a subject so interesting to Carlos and Laura, who ended up taking a beekeeping course and there was born the love for this fascinating world of bees. They began to investigate everything about honey and found out that there are various types, the characteristics of which varied depending on the region where they are produced. Honey is a wonderful and very unknown product that is worth be known by everyone, and in addition to this, the important work for the environment carried out by the associations of beekeepers that exist in Colombia is recognized.

“It is of vital importance for us as founders, to convey this message to all the people and companies involved in our processes, so that together we can achieve our goal of becoming the leader, not only in the marketing of honey, but also in sustainability in the agricultural sector in Colombia. We hope that all of you will join us on this path.”

"At Bi Abejas we are committed to taking care of nature, bees and the people who are part of our hive.”

==============================================================

Overall impact

In Bi Abejas we work for a responsible and sustainable beekeeping, generating a positive impact on the community. It is for this reason that this innovation contributes to ODS 8, Decent work and economic growth, since the focus is to support and highlight the work of the various associations of beekeepers in specific regions of the country that have been identified as possibilities for economic growth, improvement of living conditions, and processes of change through beekeeping as a sustainable practice and create job opportunities for the different populations. Likewise, the impact is generated externally in the work with vulnerable communities such as women heads of families, victims of conflict, Afro-descendant populations and peasants.

In addition, Bi Abejas contributes to ODS 12, Responsible production and consumption and ODS 13, Climate action, always guaranteeing the best natural products for the health of consumers as well as measuring the environmental impact through the weight or the total volume of the materials used to produce and package the main products and services of the organization.

One of the interests of Bi Abejas is that the brand communicates to the market its environmental awareness throughout the production chain, validating the importance of the reuse of materials and the impact that this practice has on the environment on the company's economy. In addition to having knowledge of the impact generated by the consumption of these materials in the work practices and implementing mechanisms that reduce the negative effects derived from practices.

On the other hand, in the process of cleaning and disinfection of packaging, no chemicals or polluting materials are used. They also promote initiatives and alliances for a better waste management. Similarly, internally the packaging recycling system encourages a circular economy and involves customers in the process.

Finally, “In Bi Abejas we are responsible for the impact generated through the supply chain and in particular in the use of renewable and non-renewable materials. For this reason we care about working with suppliers and associations that promote good environmental practices and create initiatives in issues of conservation of the ecosystems, which are located in the territories inhabited by the communities with which we work”.

Social and environmental benefit

The preservation of bees is fundamental for the entire ecosystem, and in this world full of industrial and chemical processes that are not very responsible, these important insects have been greatly affected. Support for beekeeping is vital for the protection and conservation of the environment and food security. Currently Bi Abejas is on a path of expansion and growth, a process that will strengthen work networks, marketing, production and environmental and social commitment. Involving all of the entrepreneurs and minimizing the environmental impact of our practices, so that together they can achieve the goal of becoming a leader, not only in the marketing of honey, but also in sustainability in the agricultural sector in Colombia.

According to Bi Abeja's 2021 sustainability report 3,337 glass containers were used of which 449 were reused with the result of 14% of the containers returned to the production chain. Although it is small, Bi Abejas is working to implement strategies that allow achieving the goal of increasing to 25% by 2023.

For Bi abejas, the environmental impact is a strategic issue, so they are working on implementing mechanisms for recycling raw materials, adequate disposal of the waste generated in the production chain and involving each of the interest groups in order to replicate the initiatives for other companies. As part of the strategies, it has implemented small actions along the value chain: In the creation of packaging, encouraging the use of recyclable materials such as glass; implementing a system of reuse of jars with customers. In addition they are trying to use less plastic bags and more of bags made from corn starch to ensure zero single-use plastic. This is the great goal of taking care of the planet and thus convert Bi Abejas into an environmentally responsible and sustainable company.

"Socially at Bi Abejas we are committed to working in territories that have been affected by the armed conflict, environmental damage, that are remote and have difficulty marketing their products with fair trade practices with beekeepers that guarantee the well-being and ensure the quality of life of each of these”.

==============================================================

Bi Abejas started in Bogotá, Colombia in 2017, but it was in 2020 when it was incorporated as a Social Benefit Company (BIC in Spanish). Focusing on the commercialization of different types of raw honeys, 100% natural. Bi Abejas seeks to strengthen the producers of the Colombian beekeeping sector, creating added value for its products and bringing them closer to the final consumer, guaranteeing the well-being for producers and customers through transparency in the processes, the offer of healthy products and with a firm purpose of environmental protection.

For this, a team of 3 people was formed, the two founders and a third person who is responsible for supporting all the accounting processes of the company. There is also a general shareholders' meeting and an advisory committee composed of 3 experts in social impact, marketing, finance and entrepreneurship. The advisory committee is convened at different times to make decisions that may be unclear for the company's management and for the planning and development of the growth strategy.

Besides the administrative team there are the beekeepers who Carlos and Laura Co-founders describe as “the most important people in the chain, we care about recognizing the value that their work deserves, making visible their practices and generating added value to their products. We are currently working with 5 associations, which have a high participation of women, young people and victims of conflict in different regions, specifically Córdoba, in the Montes de María, Cesar, in the Sierra Nevada and Bajo Cauca Antioqueño in Taraza and el Bagre”

===============================================================
