Summary

This product developed by the architect and CEO of the company Victor Barraza in 2018, was born with the idea of being able to ride bicycles and at the same time contribute to the environment. That is because bamboo-based bicycles have a longer lifespan in addition to a considerable reduction in the carbon footprint that other bicycles produce. This is mainly because of the characteristics of bamboo that make it very resistant.

A New Way to Ride a Bike

Inspiration

The idea of the bicycles arose from a transportation need of the architect and CEO of the company Victor Barraza, who was looking for a bicycle that is light and resistant at the same time, considering getting a carbon fiber one, but he wondered "if bamboo has the same characteristics as carbon fiber and is a material that does not harm the environment and- since he was doing projects with this material-, why not make one for his use." Motivated by his curiosity to make a bicycle of this eco-friendly material, he decided to make sketches and study the process for its manufacture, obtaining a first prototype.

Subsequently participating in the Reto Bio, where his research and prototype, with this new technology and innovation of epoxy fiber joints, managed to be funded by the Peruvian Government, which in turn inspired new ideas to benefit the value chain for the manufacture of these bicycles, supporting emerging economies and giving decent work to families related to this resource, and helping the environment in the process of building the product.

.....

Overall impact

One of the main objectives of JANKO, is to achieve the production of its bicycles with the least impact on the environment, through the use of eco-friendly materials, with a responsible consumption of these materials, as well as using epoxy resins and cold welding, which seek to reduce as much as possible the carbon footprint. On the other hand, to raise awareness among the population to take action on climate change, looking for sustainable transportation alternatives and at the same time supporting the national product, which in turn generates income to producers of raw materials, in this case rural families, thus generating equity in the value chain.

The impact on the environment, given that bamboo is a natural tubular material, it avoids melting metals for its creation, as well as its material captures the carbon dioxide that these smelters produce. By giving talks, exposing and encouraging the planting of bamboo and crops, JANKO seeks to combat the deforestation of forests, and through bamboo, which manages to recover degraded soils for subsequent crops. Teaching farmers how to maintain this plant, when they did not see this resource as a source of income, supports these families who usually live in rural areas, so that they have this income and encouraging the development of products based on this material, helps to improve the economy of these families.

The innovation that JANKO generated and is generating with its bamboo bicycle through its entire research and development process, has created a new technology in the country. Its natural fiber joints were the creation of the company, leading them to win various competitions and together with funding from the Peruvian Government, it was possible to continue with innovation and research. JANKO has a long-term goal to export the bicycles given the growth in European countries for sustainability and better road conditions for this means of transportation.

.....

Business benefit

Janko Ecobicicletas started their journey when the CEO, Victor Barraza, had a necessity for transportation but a transportation that helps the environment. With this necessity, the idea of creating a bicycle made of bamboo was being developed. In the beginning the CEO started creating sketches of the bicycle and the process of how to ensemble them, resulting in his first prototype. With the first prototype, Janko was able to participate in Reto Bio, in which the Ministry of Production rewards companies that promote the development of innovative projects and businesses that give value to the natural resources that Peru has through their sustainable use. In 2018 Janko managed to win the challenge, with a team made up of the CEO, Architect Victor Barraza, architect Astrid Criales and Forest Engineer Alejandro Espinoza, who contributed to the development of different technologies such as epoxy resins. Due to the effort and recognition gained, Janko managed to have a financing of 50,000 soles from the government, in order to continue with the development of more technology to gradually reduce the carbon footprint.

At the moment, Janko Ecobicicletas is still working to develop technologies that help eliminate the greatest amount of carbon in its bicycle production, as well as new products with eco-friendly materials. On the other hand, Janko continues to instruct and contribute to families in the Peruvian jungle, teaching them about bamboo and purchases of the product. With this, what Janko wants to achieve is a good use of the material, non-depredation and good care, as well as support for the local bamboo production.

.....

Social and environmental benefit

Bicycles made of bamboo develop 6 of the 17 SDGs which are goal 3 well-being and health, goal 8 decent work and 13 economic growth and action for the climate. These help both socially and environmentally.

Talking about social and environmental impact, these go hand in hand when it comes to innovation and the process of creating bicycles made of bamboo, since, in the first place, CEO Víctor Barraza is in charge of entering the Peruvian jungle in order to get the best bamboo for the construction of bicycles. Second, when he collects the bamboo, he supports the local families who live off the bamboo harvest. Third, the CEO teaches them the care that must be taken with each bamboo plant, for example, that it is not extracted from the root, but is pruned like a plant to grow back. Finally, Janko helps people to have an active life through the use of bicycles.

.....
