Traveling, getting to know new places, and enjoying breathtaking landscapes are things that most of us like. However, tourism has caused significant damage (directly and indirectly) to nature. According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), tourism accounts for 8% of global energy consumption. Tourism infrastructure accounts for 20%, and tourism activities account for 5 per cent. According to the UN, global water and energy consumption has more than doubled in the last 50 years. It is estimated that by 2050, global demand for water could increase by 80% and energy could increase by 50% due to population growth, climate change and economic development.
In Colombia, water pollution is a major problem in tourist destinations. According to the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, 70% of Colombia's rivers and lakes are contaminated. In Colombia, more attention must be paid to the lack of knowledge about sustainability on the part of tourists, in the words of Mrs. Helena Encizar "The Colombian is not yet in context or does not give much value to a sustainable hotel, for this reason it still does not provide the expected benefits."
Although the tourism sector contributes 10% of the world's GDP, the reality is that it also has a detrimental effect on the environment.

Viajar, conocer nuevos lugares y disfrutar de paisajes impresionantes son cosas que a gran parte de las personas nos gusta. Sin embargo, el turismo ha generado importantes daños (de forma directa e indirecta) sobre la naturaleza. Según la Organización Mundial del Turismo (OMT), el turismo representa el 8% del consumo mundial de energía. La infraestructura turística representa el 20%, y las actividades turísticas representan el 5%. Según la ONU, el consumo mundial de agua y de energía ha aumentado más del doble en los últimos 50 años. Se estima que para 2050, la demanda mundial de agua podría aumentar en un 80% y de la energía podrá aumentar en un 50% debido al crecimiento de la población, el cambio climático y el desarrollo económico.
En Colombia, la contaminación del agua es un problema importante en los destinos turísticos. Según el Ministerio de Ambiente y Desarrollo Sostenible, el 70% de los ríos y lagos de Colombia están contaminados. En Colombia debemos poner más atención a la falta de conocimiento en sostenibilidad por parte de los turistas, en palabras de la señora Helena Encizar “Todavía el Colombiano no está en contexto o no le pone mucho valor a un hotel sostenible, por esta razón todavía no trae los beneficios esperados.”
A pesar de que el sector turístico aporta un 10% del PIB mundial la realidad es que también produce un efecto perjudicial en el medio ambiente.

Se trata de un ejercicio de cambio de procesos que ha generado un impacto significativo, impacto que se ha visto reflejado en la región por actividades como: En su construcción se aportó al medio ambiente diseñando solo la mitad del área de la hotelería tradicional, habitaciones de 15 metros cuadrados con iluminación natural, cuando el promedio es de 28 a 32 metros cuadrados, ahorro significativo de energía por sus paneles solares que se utilizan para calentar el agua y para generar energía dentro del hotel cubriendo aproximadamente 10% del consumo total, cuenta adicional con iluminación led y aires acondicionados de tecnología inverter.
Respecto al agua, genera un ahorro significativo en comparación con los otros hoteles ya que se cuenta con sistemas ahorradores en los baños y un sistema de recirculación de aguas lluvias que se utiliza también en los riegos de los jardines. Para el diseño de algunos techos del hotel se reutiliza material para el cielo raso como latas de cerveza y gaseosa, esto con el fin de mostrar que si se puede reutilizar materia prima que se cree es solo basura. Respecto a la educación el señor Juan Pablo Hernández nos comenta “La parte de Eco se refiere a ecología, la ecología es educación, todo nuestro personal tiene en su ADN los procesos de sostenibilidad que van dirigidos a que todos cumplamos con los indicadores en ahorro de energía, agua, en el manejo de residuos sólidos y reciclaje.”

The Eco Star hotel is complying with and impacting the following SDGs.
SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation.
The Eco Star hotel has a rainwater harvesting system for watering its gardens and washing its common areas. It also has a wastewater treatment system for reuse in toilets and watering its gardens.
SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth.
The Eco Star hotel is focused on promoting sustained economic growth, generating productive, inclusive, decent regional employment for all and training on sustainable development for all.
SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production
The Eco Star hotel uses sustainable products and services, such as biodegradable cleaning products and renewable energy. It also has a recycling and composting program to reduce its waste.
In addition to these two SDGs, the Eco Star hotel is also working to meet other SDGs, such as SDG 13 (climate action) and SDG 17 (partnerships to achieve the goals).

El hotel Eco Star está cumpliendo e impactando con los ODS 6, 8 y 12.
ODS 6: Agua limpia y saneamiento.
El hotel Eco Star tiene un sistema de recolección de agua lluvia para el riego de sus jardines y el lavado de sus áreas comunes. También tiene un sistema de tratamiento de aguas residuales para su reutilización en los inodoros y en el riego de sus jardines.
ODS 8: Trabajo decente y crecimiento económico.
El hotel Eco Star está enfocado en promover el crecimiento económico sostenido, generando empleo regional productivo, inclusivo, decente para todos y con capacitaciones sobre desarrollo sostenible para todos.
ODS 12: Producción y consumo responsables
El hotel Eco Star utiliza productos y servicios sostenibles, como productos de limpieza biodegradables y energía renovable. También tiene un programa de reciclaje y compost para reducir sus residuos.
Además de estos dos ODS, el hotel Eco Star también está trabajando para cumplir con otros ODS, como el ODS 13 (acción por el clima) y el ODS 17 (alianzas para lograr los objetivos).

El beneficio primordial se ve reflejado en el aumento de clientes que visitan el hotel convirtiéndolo en el top 3 en porcentaje de ocupación en la ciudad de Ibagué - Colombia, Incrementando significativamente los ingresos. Por otro lado el ahorro en pagos de servicios públicos también mejora, “Cuando instalamos el segundo grupo de paneles solares si nos empezamos a ahorrar como $500.000 en la cuenta de energía” palabras de la señora Helena Encizar subgerente del hotel. En el medio de los hoteles se gasta aproximadamente 10 a 15 metros cúbicos por noche y el Hotel Eco Star solo consume entre 3 a 4 consumo total del hotel. Se debe resaltar lo importante de generar en todos los empleados conciencia en el ahorro diario algo que beneficia en los resultados económicos y beneficios del negocio.

El impacto en el medio ambiente del hotel Eco Star por el tamaño de las habitaciones es positivo. También se manejan campañas con alto impacto en la ciudad, un ejemplo de ellas en las palabras del Director Comercial el señor Juan Pablo Hernández “Colocamos una malla gigante en la parte externa del hotel, donde recogimos por cuatro meses, material Pet de toda la ciudad para ser reutilizado y reciclado.” La promoción de prácticas sostenibles que promueve el hotel entre sus huéspedes y empleados como el uso responsable de la energía y el agua y la generación de los residuos aporta en la sensibilidad y practica de todos los habitantes de la ciudad o por lo menos del 8%. de los turistas que habitualmente pueden entrar en esta ciudad.
