AtlanTick Repellent Products advances sustainable pest control with its pioneering all-natural tick repellent developed for the Canadian market. This innovation supports multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including disease prevention (SDG 3), natural product innovation (SDG 9), eco-conscious protection (SDG 12), and partnership efforts (SDG 17).
AtlanTick drives innovation by using only natural ingredients in its tick repellent. Founder Lisa Ali-Learning developed her formula after reviewing published studies and scientific research. In 2017, she then began selling it at farmers' markets in Nova Scotia, Canada.
Within months, she partnered with Acadia University to further study ticks and refine a scientifically validated, natural solution. Relying on carefully formulated essential oils like lemon eucalyptus, this repellent offers a safer alternative to chemical-based options. By 2023, AtlanTick reached a key milestone; its 100% natural and effective tick repellent had been officially registered with Health Canada.
Currently, Lisa continues collaboration with Acadia University, now developing a fabric spray to expand the product line. In the interview, she stated, "First it was just personal sprays, but now we're going to have a fabric spray that's going to be coming out, and the idea is to replace it with Permethrin soap clothing." Made through an extensive process, the goal is to have this new spray registered with Health Canada as well.
The story behind AtlanTick’s natural tick repellent is personal, born from a mother’s determination to protect her children. When Lisa Ali-Learning moved to Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, she didn’t know anything about ticks. That changed in 2016, when her two sons developed swelling in their knees and ankles. After eight months of doctor visits and a referral to a rheumatologist, both boys were diagnosed with Lyme arthritis. Lisa later learned Lyme disease can be contracted repeatedly.
Existing repellents were available, but Lisa avoided them. As she explained in the interview, "I grew up in Labrador where they used to spray the DDT and all that stuff for the bugs, and we always had to have DEET on, and I didn't want to do that for the kids." When searching for alternatives, she found only anecdotal solutions with no scientific backing. As a result, Lisa took matters into her own hands. "I just started doing my own research on scientific papers that have been done with essential oils and ticks," she said. "From there, I just came up with my own."
Wanting to take things further, Lisa aimed to develop a formula registered with Health Canada, one she could share with other families and pet owners. Partnering with Acadia University, she refined the formula through a rigmarole of experiments, and ultimately succeeded in getting it officially approved by Health Canada.
When first starting AtlanTick in 2017, getting a Lyme diagnosis within Nova Scotia was difficult. Many people, including Lisa herself, did not fully grasp the dangers ticks posed. That is why Lisa set out with a goal of informing others, as she emphasized in her own words, "My goal was to let people know and understand how ticks work, what you need to do to protect yourself, and how serious Lyme disease can be." She wanted to educate others, like her former self, on the seriousness of tick-borne illnesses and provide protection through repellent, especially since ticks carry more diseases than just Lyme.
Nowadays, it’s a more common topic in the province, and through her business’s social media presence, as well as tick safety presentations, Lisa has created a space for those affected. As explained by the founder herself, "We're almost like a sounding board for people who had gone through Lyme. No one had listened to them. They felt unheard, and now all of a sudden they've got someone on social media." What began as a personal struggle has now become a platform for education, advocacy, and connection.
Although AtlanTick only has six employees, its innovative approach has allowed it to achieve impressive growth. Starting at local farmers' markets in Nova Scotia, the business has expanded its reach and can now be found in stores all across Canada. In addition to its personal spray, AtlanTick's work on creating a natural tick fabric spray further showcases its commitment to innovation and meeting customer needs.
Building on its commitment to core values, AtlanTick’s innovation has played a key role in strengthening these principles. The company prioritizes innovation and learning through ongoing research to deliver the best natural protection. Its resilience and determination drive the team to overcome challenges and create meaningful solutions. Founded by a mother and trusted by families, AtlanTick's innovation embodies family and community values. Ensuring repellents are safe, effective, and transparent, the business demonstrates its commitment to integrity and trust. Finally, its environmental responsibility reflects a commitment to being good for both people and the planet.
AtlanTick offers a unique alternative to traditional tick repellents like DEET by using essential oils, ensuring a safer and more eco-friendly solution. As Lisa explains, "The product comes from the environment and it goes back into the environment, and it's not harmful to the environment, and that was super important for me." This approach not only avoids hazardous chemicals but also supports sustainable consumption, making it a responsible choice for both people and pets. By prioritizing natural ingredients, AtlanTick aligns with the growing demand for products that protect without compromising health or the planet.
In addition to its environmental benefits, the repellent helps reduce the risk of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses, creating a positive impact on public health. It offers reliable protection while remaining committed to safety and the well-being of communities. Furthermore, by raising awareness about tick-borne diseases and providing a natural alternative, the product encourages greater social consciousness and responsibility.
