This refillable model allows customers to order products shipped with a prepaid return label, allowing for easy return, cleaning, and reuse once completing a bottle.
The beauty industry is one of the largest contributors to plastic waste, producing over 120 billion units of packaging annually, often made from new plastics that account of 42% of all non-fiber plastics globally. Often all this packaging is introduced into the environment, increasing pollution in the oceans and landfills, as only 9% of plastics are recycled. Leaving a significant impact on the environment, contributing to microplastic pollution, and harming ecosystems and human health. By extending the life cycle of packaging, this model reduces demand for single-use plastics and minimizes carbon emissions associated with the manufacturing and disposal of virgin plastic.
Complementing this closed-loop model is the use of eco-friendly shipping and packaging solutions, in partnerships with Trivium, Pratt Industries, and PACT Collective. The choice of aluminum over plastic is intentional; aluminum is more durable and can withstand repeated use and washing without compromising safety or quality. Trivium, which supplies aluminum bottles with permanent printing options, allows a decrease in the percent of returned bottles due to dents and chipping and/or scratching. This allows the bottles to remain pristine even after 8+ washes in the industrial bottlewasher, allowing recycling to occur, hopefully, after 10+ uses. And, once needing recycling, Plaine Products partners with the PACT Collective, a nonprofit that ends packaging waste in the beauty and wellness industry by finding solutions for hard-to-recycle materials.
In addition, Pratt Industries helps with distribution by supplying durable, 100% recycled cardboard boxes that can be reused 4–5 times before recycling. This helps amplify the circular subscription approach, allowing not only each bottle to be reused multiple times before being recycled, but even the material which they are shipped in. As well, Plaine Products is committed to using plant-based, non-toxic ingredients, which further contributes to prevent environmental degradation, like cleaner waterways and a healthier ecosystem. In combination, these steps ensure that the product’s formula, packaging, and distribution aligns with the company’s sustainability goals.
The model developed by Lindsey McCoy, Plaine Products’ co-founder, stems from her experience with plastic pollution in the Bahamas, where she previously managed an environmental nonprofit. “Being in a country with less developed waste infrastructure, the problems created by single-use packaging were glaringly obvious,” she explained during the interview. This firsthand exposure to the impact of plastic waste on marine life and natural habitats motivated McCoy to create a business that would offer a real solution to the problem.
McCoy’s background in nonprofit work influenced her approach to Plaine Products, as she sought to combine business acumen with a mission for environmental change. Plaine Products’ innovative closed-loop business model offers both significant benefits and challenges. This model allows for short-term impacts including the diversion of over 600,000 plastic bottles from landfills and oceans at the end of 2023, and the prevention of 35,273 kg of CO2 emissions, as documented in their impact reports. Reducing the reliance on single-use plastics helps raise awareness about sustainable consumption, which could lead to long-term effects where a cultural shift could propel scalability in refillable product models within the beauty industry. However, this reliance on consumer engagement presents a potential limitation as consumers must actively participate by refilling and returning bottles to sustain environmental benefits. Without widespread adoption, the model's full environmental benefits cannot be realized. And, the transportation involved in returns, especially over long distances, adds a layer of carbon emissions and energy use.
Additionally, while Plaine Products’ use of aluminum bottles significantly reduces the reliance on single-use plastics, it is not without environmental trade-offs. Aluminum mining and production are resource-intensive processes that involve land degradation, habitat and social destruction, and substantial energy consumption, often reliant on fossil fuels. While aluminum's recyclability helps offset these impacts over its lifecycle, the initial mining stage remains an environmental concern that challenges the sustainability of the business’ products.
Moreover, this innovation largely addresses a first-world problem—providing sustainable alternatives to convenience-based personal care routines. In regions with less disposable income or limited access to postal infrastructure, the model may not be practical or scalable. This is also evident as Plaine Products’ sales growth suggests impact, but more extensive adoption across industries and regions is needed to achieve transformational environmental change. These challenges highlight the need for ongoing innovation to minimize indirect environmental impacts and make the model accessible to a broader demographic
