Todos los días se dan a conocer noticias sobre el deterioro ambiental. Recién el pasado 29 de julio se alcanzó el Día del Sobregiro de la Tierra para este año, la fecha más temprana en la historia del planeta, lo que quiere decir que para ese día ya se habían terminado los recursos naturales destinados para el 2019, de acuerdo con la organización Global Footprint Network. A la vez, la descomposición social es tema en el día a día con cuestiones tan lamentables como matanzas en centros comerciales, violaciones de derechos humanos, feminicidios o terribles condiciones laborales.

Tradicionalmente, las empresas han tenido un único propósito: ganar dinero, pasando por alto tanto a seres humanos como a naturaleza para la consecución de ello. Afortunadamente, han surgido empresas preocupadas por cambiar este paradigma adoptando prácticas que equilibren el trabajo empresarial con el cuidado del medio ambiente y el desarrollo armónico de las personas que las integran.

Una de ellas es Incyma, acrónimo de Innovación, Calidad y Medio Ambiente, con una visión enfocada a la responsabilidad social, promoviendo prácticas en el tema tanto al interior de la organización como en sus clientes. Está ubicada en Badajoz, en el Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Extremadura, la comunidad autónoma más vulnerable de España. Extremadura está ubicada al suroeste de la Península Ibérica y cuenta con el Producto Interno Bruto más bajo de dicho país.

La intención principal de Incyma es acercar las prácticas de responsabilidad social a las pequeñas y medianas empresas (pymes), que constituyen a la gran mayoría de la zona (99%), para que se vayan sumando y se vea un cambio mayor a largo plazo. “En Extremadura, con el estándar autonómico hay 14 empresas certificadas en RSC e Incyma ha contribuido a que superen la verificación. Sin embargo, hay otros estándares a nivel internacional como pueden ser el Global Reporting Intiative (GRI), RS10, muchísimos, Pacto Mundial de la ONU que también es una herramienta a la que te adhieres que no es certificable pero te da herramientas”, manifestó Ana Ruano.

“En España hay ya bastantes, no muchas, no tanto como a nivel internacional, por ejemplo en Sudamérica donde estas cuestiones de RSC están mucho más desarrolladas que aquí. En los países nórdicos también se nota que ya está mucho más desarrollado, pero bueno poco a poco todo va llegando. En Extremadura hace falta un empuje grande todavía, porque 14 empresas con el estándar autonómico es muy poco. Nosotras somos pioneras en la zona, hay empresas que hacen cositas pero digamos de mayor envergadura, nosotras estamos ya muy bien posicionadas en este sector”, afirmó.

Incyma es una empresa innovadora que también ofrece a sus clientes servicios vinculados con sistemas de gestión de calidad, medio ambiente, riesgos y seguridad; así como seguridad alimentaria e inocuidad. Every day there is news about environmental deterioration. It was not until July 29th that the Earth Overshoot Day was reached for this year, the earliest date in the history of the planet, which means that by that day the natural resources destined for 2019 had already been completed, according to the Global Footprint Network. At the same time, social decomposition is a daily issue with such regrettable issues as massacres in shopping malls, human rights violations, femicide or terrible working conditions.

Traditionally, companies have had only one purpose: to make money, bypassing both human beings and nature to achieve it. Fortunately, companies have emerged concerned with changing this paradigm by adopting practices that balance business work with care for the environment and the harmonious development of the people who make up the company.

One of them is Incyma, an acronym for Innovation, Quality and Environment, with a vision focused on social responsibility, promoting practices on the subject both within the organization and its customers. It is located in Badajoz, in the Science and Technology Park of Extremadura, the most vulnerable autonomous community in Spain. Extremadura is located in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula and has the lowest Gross Domestic Product in that country.

Incyma's main intention is to bring social responsibility practices closer to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which make up the vast majority of the area (99%), so that they can be added and a greater change can be seen in the long term. "In Extremadura, with the autonomous standard there are 14 companies certified in CSR and Incyma has helped some them pass the verification. However, there are other international standards such as Global Reporting Intiative (GRI), RS10, many others, like UN Global Compact that is not certifiable but gives you tools," said Ana Ruano.

"In Spain there are already enough, not many, not as much as at the international level, for example in South America where these CSR issues are much more developed than here. In the Nordic countries it is also noticeable that it is already much more developed, but little by little everything is arriving. In Extremadura a big push is still needed, because 14 companies with the regional standard is very little. We are pioneers in the area, there are companies that do little things but let's say of greater importance, we are already very well positioned in this sector," she said.

Incyma is an innovative company that also offers its clients services related to quality, environment, risk and safety management systems, as well as food safety and innocuousness. In addition, in research, development and innovation management, strategic consulting and training.

Inspiration

Incyma fue fundada por Ana Belén Ruano Durán y Natalia Cilleros Torres en el año 2007, justo cuando iniciaba la crisis económica en España. Inicialmente, la empresa se dedicaba solamente a la implantación de sistemas normativos como las normas ISO, sistemas de calidad o de seguridad alimentaria. Sin embargo, la crisis las alcanzó. “De repente, en un año o algo así empezó a caer todo, todo. Y como nos dedicamos precisamente a la implantación de normas y estándares voluntarios, cuando realmente todo afloja, pues lógicamente lo primero que recortan es eso”, señala Ana Ruano. Actualmente, además de las dos fundadoras, colabora con ellas Inmaculada Piñero Carretero, por lo que la empresa está formada únicamente por tres mujeres.

Sin embargo, las crisis son también oportunidad de crecimiento y es lo que decidió hacer Incyma. En palabras de su directora, “fue un momento muy complicado pero que nos ayudó a reinventarnos; fue en el momento en que dijimos, jolín, tenemos que pensar a ver de qué manera podemos hacer las cosas para posicionarnos en algo que realmente la sociedad necesite y que no nos veamos en una situación como la que hemos atravesado”. Fue entonces que comenzaron a capacitarse en Responsabilidad Social Empresarial con diversas entidades a nivel nacional e internacional cuando apenas era un tema incipiente en España y ahora es la consultoría pionera en el tema en la región de Extremadura.

El tema de la responsabilidad social comenzó a sonar en el año 2010 y a aplicarse sobre todo en las grandes empresas. Sin embargo, tras la crisis se replantea el paradigma de que las empresas sólo sirven para ganar dinero para los accionistas y comienzan a preocuparse por otras cuestiones. “Está claro que las empresas no son ONG, tienen que generar beneficios, pero eso no está reñido con que puedan a su vez generar beneficios sociales y ambientales en el entorno, en los trabajadores, en todos los grupos de interés y los stakeholders que le rodean”, indicó Ruano Durán.

Como parte de la misión y visión de Incyma, la innovación es fundamental para introducir nuevas mejoras, adaptarse a las necesidades de sus clientes y la sociedad, pues piensan que de lo contrario estará destinada al fracaso. “Digamos que la innovación es algo que cualquier empresa, sea pyme, micro pyme, tiene que tener metido en venas para triunfar a largo plazo. Lógicamente es algo de nuestros valores y lo tenemos que mantener sí o sí”.

Incyma was founded by Ana Belén Ruano Durán and Natalia Cilleros Torres in 2007, just as the economic crisis in Spain was beginning. However, crises are also an opportunity for growth and that is what Incyma decided to do. In the words of its director, "it was a very complicated moment but it helped us to reinvent ourselves; it was at the moment when we said, jolín, we have to think about how we can do things to position ourselves in something that society really needs and that we do not see ourselves again in a situation like the one we have gone through". It was then that they began to train in Corporate Social Responsibility with various entities nationally and internationally when it was just an emerging issue in Spain and is now the pioneering consultancy on the subject in the region of Extremadura.
The subject of social responsibility began to play in 2010 and to be applied above all in large companies. However, after the crisis, the paradigm that companies only serve to earn money for shareholders and begin to worry about other issues is being rethought. "It is clear that companies are not NGOs, they have to generate profits, but that is not at odds with the fact that they can in turn generate benefits in the environment, in the workers, in all the interest groups and the stakeholders that surround them," said Ruano Durán.

As part of Incyma's mission and vision, innovation is fundamental for introducing new improvements, adapting to the needs of its clients and society, because they think that otherwise it will be doomed to failure. "Let's say that innovation is something that any company, whether SMEor micro SME, has to have in its veins in order to succeed in the long term. Logically it is something of our values and we have to maintain it".

Overall impact

Ana Ruano relata que Incyma nació también de la intención de hacer las cosas de forma diferente. Tras dos años de laborar en la iniciativa privada, no les gustó cómo se trabajaba allí. “Trabajábamos en una empresa en que no se valoraba la formación de los trabajadores, donde era importante sólo echar horas sin tener ningún tipo de vida personal. Yo aguanté dos años, mi compañera Natalia estuvo un poquito más pero yo a los dos años dije: yo necesito ponerme por mi cuenta porque veía que los clientes tenían confianza en mí, que yo podía sacar adelante la empresa sola”.

Es así que Incyma lleva 12 años en activo habiendo asesorado a más de 500 clientes, en especial pequeñas y medianas empresas que es donde buscan crear el mayor impacto. Si bien aún falta mucho por hacer en materia de Responsabilidad Social Empresarial en Extremadura, dado que sólo 14 empresas están certificadas y no existen mediciones que determinen el impacto que ha tenido el trabajo de Incyma al colaborar con la certificación de algunas de ellas, quienes forman parte de la organización buscan a través de la formación que la cultura de la responsabilidad social permee.

“Nosotras lo que hemos intentado es dar a conocer cada vez más el mundo de la RSE; organizamos muchas jornadas, llevamos desde el año 2010 haciendo jornadas de nivel, trayéndonos a ponentes importantes… Creo que en ese sentido ha sido un logro para nosotras que al final convoquemos y la gente tenga interés y asista a las jornadas; entonces, nuestra repercusión es la difundir y dar a conocer más la RSE en una comunidad donde va llegando de forma lenta, pero bueno, estamos ayudando a que esto cale en el tejido empresarial. Esa es nuestra misión fundamentalmente”, reveló en entrevista Ana Ruano, directora de la empresa.

Ana Ruano relates that Incyma was also born from the intention of doing things differently. After two years of working in the private sector, they didn't like the way things were done there. "We worked in a company where the training of the workers was not valued, where it was important only to put in hours without having any kind of personal life. I endured two years, my colleague Natalia was a little longer, but I had enough, I needed to be on my own because I saw that customers had confidence in me, that I could run the company alone.

Incyma has been active for 12 years, having advised more than 500 clients, especially small and medium businesses, which is where they seek to create the greatest impact. Although there is still much to be done in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility in Extremadura, given that only 14 companies are certified and there are no measurements to determine the impact that Incyma's work has had when collaborating with the certification of some of them, those who are part of the organization seek through training that the culture of social responsibility permeates.

"What we have tried to do is to make the world of CSR more and more known; we organize many conferences, we have been doing level conferences since 2010, bringing important speakers... I think that in that sense it has been an achievement for us that in the end we convene and people have interest and attend the conferences; then, our impact is to spread and make CSR more known in a community where it is arriving slowly, but well, we are helping this to penetrate the business fabric. That is our mission fundamentally," revealed Ana Ruano, director of the company.

Business benefit

A partir de que Ruano Durán y Cilleros Torres decidieron especializarse en RSC han tenido muchas más oportunidades de trabajo; desde comenzar a implantar protocolos GRI, normas RS10 o auditar memorias de información no financiera para grandes empresas. “Para mí, hasta ahora ese ha sido uno de mis mayores logros profesionales: empezar a ver una oportunidad en algo que era realmente necesario para el mundo y que eso nos ayude a desarrollarnos profesionalmente en algo que nos motiva y nos gusta. Para mí ese ha sido uno de mis mayores logros profesionales hasta el momento”, explica Ana Ruano.

Desde que ambas socias decidieron hacer de Incyma una empresa floreciente, viendo más allá de la obtención de ganancias monetarias, es que han logrado permanecer en el mercado por más de 10 años, además de convertirse en referencia en la región.

El ser una empresa innovadora le permite tener sus oficinas en el Parque Científico Tecnológico de Extremadura, ubicado al interior de la Universidad de Extremadura, donde se insertan empresas que desarrollan innovaciones con matices diferentes a lo existente en el mercado. “Eso te da la posibilidad de establecer sinergias con otras organizaciones de distintos tipos y al final, presentar proyectos en colaboración, y se benefician mutuamente de muchas cuestiones. Se crea como una red de colaboración tanto a nivel nacional como internacional porque tienen enlaces con la Unión Europea, a nivel de Sudamérica también hay proyectos de Horizonte 2020 que al final se establecen vínculos con otros países. Es muy positivo desde ese punto de vista”, comentó la Directora de Incyma.

Since Ruano Durán and Cilleros Torres decided to specialize in CSR they have had many more job opportunities; from starting to implement GRI protocols, RS10 standards or auditing non-financial information memories for large companies. "For me, until now, this has been one of my greatest professional achievements: to begin to see an opportunity in something that was really necessary for the world and that helps us to develop professionally in something that motivates us and we like. For me this has been one of my greatest professional achievements so far," explains Ana Ruano.

Since both partners decided to make Incyma a flourishing company, looking beyond obtaining monetary profits, they have managed to remain in the market for more than 10 years, in addition to becoming a reference in the region.

Being an innovative company allows it to have its offices in the Science and Technology Park of Extremadura, located inside the University of Extremadura, where companies that develop innovations are inserted, with different nuances to what exists in the market. "This gives you the possibility to establish synergies with other organizations of different types and at the end, present projects in collaboration, and mutually benefit from many issues. It is created as a network of collaboration both nationally and internationally because they have links with the European Union, at the level of South America there are also Horizon 2020 projects that ultimately establish links with other countries. It is very positive from that point of view," said Incyma's Director.

Social and environmental benefit

Extremadura cuenta con la Estrategia Extremeña de Responsabilidad Social Empresarial para que las empresas construyan valor en lo económico, ambiental y social, donde la competitividad vaya de la mano de la sustentabilidad; apoyada por la Ley 15/2010 del 9 de diciembre, de Responsabilidad Social Empresarial en Extremadura y el Decreto 110/2013, que establece condiciones y medidas para alcanzar estos objetivos.

El gobierno supo entender que, ante la crisis económica y la crisis global, había que tomar otro rumbo y hacer las cosas de manera diferente para obtener resultados positivos. Por ello, dicha ley prevé auditorías de parte de entidades especializadas independientes que garanticen que las empresas cumplen con los requerimientos y estos sean homologables de manera nacional e internacional.

Incyma supo prever esta realidad y de ahí que años antes se prepararan en el tema y ahora es una de las empresas autorizadas para la Certificación de Responsabilidad Social Empresarial de la Junta de Extremadura, conforme a dicha legislación, a la vez de ser una empresa certificada conforme al modelo autonómico de la Junta. Por lo tanto, busca llevar de la mano a los empresarios ofreciéndoles opciones para adoptar estas medidas que no sólo beneficiarán a su empresa en un futuro, sino también a la región y al mundo, en general.

La RSE busca que los negocios estén en equilibrio con el medio ambiente y la sociedad, siendo rentables y éticos, adquiriendo un compromiso con el entorno adoptando medidas para lograr el desarrollo sostenible, la inclusión laboral, igualdad de oportunidades y la transparencia.

Extremadura has the Extremadura Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy for companies to build value in the economic, environmental and social, where competitiveness goes hand in hand with sustainability, supported by Law 15/2010 of December 9th, Corporate Social Responsibility in Extremadura and Decree 110/2013, which establishes conditions and measures to achieve these objectives.

The government was able to understand that, in the face of the economic crisis and the global crisis, we had to take another direction and do things differently to obtain positive results. Therefore, this law provides for audits by independent specialized entities to ensure that companies comply with the requirements and these are nationally and internationally comparable.

Incyma knew how to foresee this reality and that is why years before they prepared themselves on the subject and now it is one of the companies authorised for the Certification of Corporate Social Responsibility of the Regional Government of Extremadura, in accordance with said legislation, as well as being a company certified in accordance with the autonomous model of the Regional Government. Therefore, it seeks to take businessmen by the hand by offering them options to adopt these measures that will not only benefit their company in the future, but also the region and the world in general.

CSR seeks to balance business with the environment and society, being profitable and ethical, acquiring a commitment to the environment by adopting measures to achieve sustainable development, labour inclusion, equal opportunities and transparency.
