Summary

The business that Chivite conducts is producing and exporting world-class wines all over Europe and the US. Legardeta property is where all the wine production takes place. It is located in Villatuerta, 40 km southwest of Pamplona. There are more than 245 acres, of which currently 103 are vineyards, perfectly integrated into the ecosystem of scrubland and native trees.
Chivite was a visionary and pioneer company when it came to climate change, and they knew it was something that had to be acted upon. They aligned with WWF at the beginning of the 2000s with the premise of committing to contributing in a good way and being the solution instead of the obstacle. In terms of the connection of this company to the SDGs, it would be necessary to mention the following 3:
SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production: Chivite places a strong emphasis on sustainable viticulture and winemaking practices. They actively work to reduce the environmental impact of their operations by implementing efficient resource management and minimizing waste. This is accomplished by using natural filters to eliminate harmful pollution in the local environment which we will later explain in detail.

SDG 15 - Life on Land: Chivite recognizes the importance of preserving biodiversity in their vineyard ecosystems. They promote sustainable land use practices and strive to maintain healthy soils and natural habitats within their vineyard areas.

SDG 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth: Chivite's sustainable practices benefit the local community by providing stable employment opportunities in the wine sector.

Their commitment to responsible business practices demonstrates how the wine industry can positively impact the environment, society, and the economy while producing world-class wines.


Innovation

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production: Chivite places a strong emphasis on sustainable viticulture and winemaking practices. They actively work to reduce the environmental impact of their operations by implementing efficient resource management and minimizing waste. An example of this is that they use natural plant filters to neuter the remaining environmentally hazardous byproduct, a consequence of wine production. These filters are indeed plants, that benefit and grow with this waste, thus reducing the contamination to 0 and nullifying the amount of pollution that would reach and affect the Ega River. Though this example may work as SDG number 12, it's also compatible with SDG 15.

SDG 15:Life on Land: Chivite recognizes the importance of preserving biodiversity in their vineyard ecosystems. They promote sustainable land use practices and strive to maintain healthy soils and natural habitats within their vineyard areas. Respecting the mountain areas, working the land vertically without tilting destroys the different horizons of the soil, and planting vineyards against the slope to reduce erosion. With this same objective, work in the vineyard has been replaced with natural plant covers that also improve the structure of the soil, increase the microbial life of the soil, and prevent excess mineralization, contributing to making this natural cycle of nutrient recovery effective, practically self-sufficient, in balance with the low production required to maintain maximum grape quality levels. Energy-efficient production processes, and waste reduction initiatives, are linked to SDG 12, whilst actively advocating for "life on land".

Chivite started to be known as the visionary company that opened the gates to more sustainable practices, therefore amplifying its already existing and well-known prestige. One could say that innovation opened a new market for this company.

The environment has benefitted in quite a few aspects. Well-managed vineyards can support biodiversity by providing habitat for various plants, insects, birds, and other wildlife, such as turtle doves, eagle owls, tawny owls, red kites, and many pores. Maintaining natural vegetation between rows, using cover crops, and preserving adjacent natural areas can contribute to biodiversity conservation. Sustainable vineyard practices, such as cover cropping, composting, and minimal use of synthetic chemicals, can enhance soil health.
