Summary

The Catedra is an idea developed by Campus Home in collaboration with the University of Navarra. The first objective was to invest in the Catedra to research environmental material. Besides the research, it raises awareness and educates students about caring for nature and sustainability. In this way, the innovation contributes to fulfilling some SDGs like Sustainable cities and communities and Responsible Consumption and Production. Campus Home is a company concerned about the importance of sustainability, and they take advantage of this opportunity that is the Catedra to gain access to more people beyond their clients. This innovation will not only help Campus Home to connect with its clients by making them connect with environmental change and sustainability but also connect with UNAV students. This connection is specific in the activities carried out in collaboration with the University thanks to this innovation. The main goal of Campus Home with this collaboration is to help make students aware of improving the planet. "We set the example so that they care about the planet in the future".

Innovation

This innovation seeks to improve the education of people as well as the development of research for the environment. This innovation goal is to teach about sustainability and responsible consumption to students, so they can apply them daily, helping society and the environment. Specifically, this innovation will contribute to SDGs 11 and 12. In terms of the Sustainable Cities and communities’ goal, this innovation contributes to protecting the world’s natural and cultural heritage with activities such as cleaning the river and reducing the environmental impact of cities. Last year, was carried out a voluntary activity consisting of cleaning the Sadar river in Pamplona. It also contributes to responsible consumption by giving advice and taking measures about the light, water, and food waste of the students they are housing, and also by focusing on their recycling by putting different litter bins.

Another initiative that has been carried out thanks to this innovation is Green Week, which is both Campus Home and the University of Navarra. This initiative consists of a week in which students can attend different talks which explain the problems existing nowadays regarding the environment and sustainability. Just as they show in their following advances to contribute to this world. The last Green Week was between the 21st and 26th of March 2022, when at least 130 students participated. There were 16 activities during this week about sustainability in different scopes like fashion, entrepreneurship, marketing, investing, and construction. There was also a flea market and a workshop based on recycling. The impact of this initiative is remarkable in terms of the 11th SDG. It helps to accomplish a more sustainable city and the environment by showing how it is possible to implement sustainability in different fields. It also develops the 12th one by focusing on recycling and reducing waste. It also helps to develop the 4th SDG because, even though there aren’t academic activities, they are 13 lectures of high quality that can be considered education as their goal is to teach about sustainability.

Campus Home customers can help the environment with organized activities to clean our planet. Last semester there were several cleaning activities, for example, Campus Home organized to take customers to a river and collect all the garbage that is in this to help the planet as well as the environment. Campus Home last week organized a volunteer to help people with disabilities.

Sustainable Education for University Students

Inspiration

We asked the person we interviewed to give us in a sentence the inspiration that this innovation could provide when she answered the following: "We understand that we have a responsibility to always be able to contribute to our society and to be able to promote thinking towards students who are the future, is important to be able to move towards a better and ecological society, we believe we can make the initiative". They seek to contribute to the environment and the world. They believe they have a huge responsibility since they are responsible for the accommodation of many students in Navarra, so they want to see the future. And what better way than by instructing the children who will become the leaders of our future? They are the future and therefore seek to give them an example as a company and as individuals. We all have to contribute to the environment and the world. The way they also do it at Campus Home.

Overall impact

The overall impact of the innovation is very positive. The innovation has achieved 50 researchers that lead this project hand in hand with the University of Navarra. The impact made by Green Week with its 13 lectures, the workshop, the flea market, and the activity of river cleaning was very positive, as more than a hundred students took part in this initiative. This innovation has only been in Pamplona for a short time, however, in the long term, it seeks to be able to contribute on a large scale to positive environmental change in Navarra as a way of thanking the city for so much that it has offered them in their work environment. On the other hand, Daniela Four has told us that little by little this innovation will take shape to be more widely heard to encourage more university students from Pamplona to carry out acts that benefit our environment environmentally. However, although the innovation has been carried out locally, the participants could turn their daily habits into ones more sustainable and influence their close friends or relatives. It obtains a plus of importance when we talk about the University of Navarra, where a significant percentage of its students are international, meaning that, in the long term, this could have even a bigger impact than it seemed at first glance. After a short time since its creation, it has been possible to find plans that are about to be executed, such as the expansion of environmental ideas and recycling acts to enrich our natural heritage, and the care it deserves will have a positive impact on the entire society. Since the Catedra innovation was signed in 2021 for 4 years, there are still activities to come.

Business benefit

Because the business made the Catedra of sustainability and care for the environment they have differentiated in different aspects. The company benefits because they contribute to their customers and workers since they instruct them to take care of the planet and provide them with the best possible education and that with it they can make a difference. This project makes this business different from the other accommodations since it is one of the only ones that try to make a change in the world and, apart from encouraging its customers to make a change that speaks very well of the company and attracts attention. With this project, they manage to have a better reputation with the University and our clients, and so students who are interested in the University of Navarra still look at Campus Home.

With this agreement, Campus Home manages to have a close relationship with the University of Navarra which opens many doors to different scenarios and to look in different ways to help students and the environment.

In the end, all the projects that the Catedra is developing will serve to support the environment and leave a mark on the planet, and this recognition will have the University of Navarra with Campus Home so it would speak very well of the company and attract new customers to its market. In conclusion, the business benefits by getting an agreement with a university with plenty of students that would need an apartment to live, so it is a reasonable way to differentiate from the competitors by obtaining the distinction of collaborating with the University.

Social and environmental benefit

It will help the world through the discoveries or research that are scientifically made based on the “Catedra” research agreement. It will also help on a person-to-person basis through activities such as “Green Week” or the education given in different talks. The scope of this innovation is incalculable because it teaches about sustainability and responsible consumption to many students, who could turn them into their daily habits and influence their close friends or relatives. It obtains a plus of importance when we talk about the University of Navarra, where a remarkable percentage of its students are international, so this could have a massive impact.

The discoveries of the innovation of the Catedra will contribute scientifically. At the same time as it will offer customers and students of Navarra a better education for the knowledge of a problem that exists today with the environment. Students will be made aware that we all have a responsibility to make a change on the planet.

About the SDGs of the UN, this innovation will benefit society and the environment mainly in their 11th and 12th. In terms of the Sustainable Cities and communities’ goal, the innovation contributes to the protection of the world’s natural and cultural heritage with activities such as cleaning the river and reducing the environmental impact of cities. It also contributes to responsible consumption by giving advice and taking measures about the light, water, and food waste of the students they are housing, and also by focusing on their recycling by putting different litter bins.
