The founders of Rust Belt Riders were inspired to start a business to reduce food waste when they saw how much food ends up in landfills. It was a clear problem and solution situation for them. The food that ended up in landfills could be used to create compost that would instead produce nutrient-rich food for the community. RBR aims to stay local. “We want to provide where there is a need”( Zoe Apsidorf, Director of Residential Experience).

The leaders were also inspired by the local community and are constantly looking for ways to support their community. A great impact we have is that “residential adoption is starting to influence municipal decision-making”(Zoe Apsidorf). In this way, residents are gaining the ability to impact their community’s attitudes toward food waste and help create a positive environmental impact. “Municipalities are assessing their own environmental impact because they see their residents demanding services(Apsidorf)”

Rust Belt Riders also have a desire and inspiration to offer high-quality soil and compost mixes to local farmers. They believe that by doing this, they are helping to create the production of healthier fruits and vegetables. The leaders are inspired to continuously expand the positive impact of both sides of their business, reducing food waste and creating nutrient-rich compost soil.

They are reducing the amount of compostable waste that ends up in landfills and actively taking something that is harming the environment and turning it into something that is helping the environment instead. They are helping reduce carbon emissions in the NE Ohio area and creating rich compost that will start the cycle of healthier, and more nutrient-rich food growth.

Not to mention, they are raising awareness of composting and preventing food waste with every company and household that joins their program. In this manner, they are creating a large societal impact. What is interesting is that instead of trying to grow RBR’s business across the country, RBR is more interested in staying local. They feel that the best way we can have the biggest impact on food waste reduction as a society is if each community focuses on reducing food waste in its area. RBR has grown to a large company of about 30 employees but they are still only able to compost about 2% of the food waste in the Cleveland- Cuyahoga area.

To enhance their environmental impact through expanding their societal impact, RBR is a part of many boards and coalitions to prevent food waste across the nation. They offer mentorship and guidance to many other businesses that are looking to reduce food waste and create a positive environmental impact on their community.
