Summary

Grupo MR is a leading company in the comprehensive management of waste, offering customized solutions ranging from collection to PET plastic recycling. Its sustainable approach directly contributes to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially in promoting responsible production and consumption (SDG 12) and the preservation of life below water (SDG 14)

Innovation

Grupo MR, a company based in La Laguna with over 23 years of experience was founded by Homero del Bosque in 2000. This was the first company in the region to pursue comprehensive management of PET waste, collecting, treating, and recycling these materials, thereby helping to maximize their lifespan and mitigate landfill saturation. The company operates within the circular economy, offering a full-service approach from collection to separation, with the final product sent to those who turn it into entirely new products. Homero emphasizes that, for him, "Innovation doesn't necessarily mean something revolutionary on a global scale, nor does it require the integration of technology." Despite starting 23 years ago when the internet was not as prevalent as today, he considers his idea innovative. He saw a problem and sought to solve it, even though he was the first to do so.

Inspiration

Since its establishment in 2000, Grupo MR has been a project born out of commitment and passion for the environment. The founder of this company had a vision tied to a business opportunity he saw in the region, driven by the observation of large amounts of waste generated in restaurants, parties, or family events. He wondered, "Is there a way to generate less waste? Can these bottles and containers be used a second time?" He recalls saying in an interview, "I noticed a significant lack in our city regarding proper waste management, especially concerning plastics. It inspired the idea of creating a company that not only offers effective solutions for handling these materials but also promotes environmental awareness and corporate responsibility." Additionally, he mentions that 90% of the products received by his company are recycled or second-hand.

Overall impact

When discussing the founding of Grupo MR, the company's innovation was reflected in an immediate improvement in plastic waste management. "Of course, it was challenging because when you innovate something entirely, the city isn't prepared, and progress is slow in some situations. However, at the time, we had no competition, which allowed us to effectively capture the market."

Over the years, the long-term effects of Grupo MR's innovation have been significant and sustainable. The company has solidified its position as a leader in comprehensive waste management. "Moreover, it's been a dream come true to see how this company originated from a dream and a passion for innovation, and now it's a place where even my family and children are involved and work." - Homero

Business benefit

La Laguna, as well as the establishment of Grupo MR, have benefited because the city has been a significant waste generator for many years. Naturally, Grupo MR benefits from this as waste management is its business focus, and the city of Torreón benefits as it gradually produces less waste.

Social and environmental benefit

"The innovation of the recycling plant contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as well as helping to decrease the level of contamination in our city. The amount of waste generated, especially that which is burned, is reduced. It's crucial to emphasize in this interview that most of the materials we recycle are harmful when left to decompose, especially when they are burned using the typical waste treatment processes in the region. However, PET is a material that is 100% recyclable and is used in nearly all the utensils we have and need in our daily lives. Therefore, these recycling processes serve to extend the lifespan of many products." - Homero
