Summary

Dynamic Manufacturing is a leader in automotive remanufacturing, a controlled and sustainable process that restores used parts to their original or better quality. By extending the lifecycle of automotive components such as torque converters, automatic transmissions, transfer case assemblies, and engines; Dynamic reduces waste and conserves natural resources. This innovative approach directly supports UN SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by promoting circular economy practices and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by lowering carbon emissions through sustainable manufacturing.

Innovation

Dynamic Manufacturing’s core innovation lies in extending product lifecycles through advanced remanufacturing processes that support environmental sustainability and cost-effectiveness. Using rigorous quality control and cutting-edge techniques, the company disassembles, inspects, cleans, and replaces worn components to meet Original Equipment Service (OES) specifications. This process minimizes waste, reduces emissions, and promotes a circular economy.

In response to the rise of electric and hybrid vehicles, Dynamic has expanded its expertise to include the remanufacturing of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. Since EV batteries degrade over time, Dynamic restores them to OES standards, extending their lifespan and reducing environmental impact. When batteries are no longer suitable for vehicles, they are repurposed for secondary applications such as energy storage systems and stationary backup power solutions. This approach not only reduces electronic waste but also supports SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) by facilitating the reuse of batteries in renewable energy storage. Additionally, Dynamic ensures that end-of-life batteries are disposed of responsibly through partnerships with third-party vendors, preventing hazardous materials from entering ecosystems and contributing to SDG 15 (Life on Land) by protecting the environment from pollution.

Chad Richardson, Vice President of Environmental, Health & Safety, emphasizes that Dynamic's commitment to sustainability is deeply rooted in its company culture and leadership. With "strong top-down support," the company has created a large-scale impact on local communities and the environment. Integrating sustainability into its mission and operations, Dynamic exemplifies how businesses can drive meaningful climate action while balancing long-term environmental responsibility with industry innovation.

Inspiration

Dynamic Manufacturing began with John Partipilo, an Italian immigrant with a profound passion for mechanics. Mr. Partipilo’s curiosity, passion, and entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish the foundation for a business in 1955. Starting with torque converters, his remanufacturing process addressed long-standing concerns about reliability and performance. From investing all he had in a $1,094.94 loan to start his business innovation, Mr. Partipilo came a long way in transforming his local Chicago-based operation into a nationwide leader in remanufactured automotive components.

The innovation for automotive remanufacturing came about in the 1940s due to resource strains from World War II. During this time, the manufacturing industry had to use car and truck parts as a resource-efficient way to produce and maintain heavy machinery. With this innovation, Mr. Partipilo realized the business opportunity in automatic transmission repair. Nowadays, it is not resource scarcity that drives remanufacturing but rather the ability to transition to a green automotive industry. The future is focused on sustainable and eco-friendly remanufacturing.

Mr. Partipilo passed away in 2006, but his legacy lives on through the leadership of his daughter, Nancy Partipilo, and grandson, Johnny Bellantuono. The family-owned and operated business has expanded its operations while staying true to its core principles. Chad Richardson stated, “Environmental sustainability efforts are a core to what we do here at Dynamic. They are just as important as our quality metrics, and they’re just as important as our maintenance routines.” The company's ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovation demonstrates a mission to provide value across all areas.

Overall impact

Dynamic Manufacturing’s innovative approach to extending product lifecycles, reducing costs, and adapting to EV technology has strengthened its relationships with OEMs and expanded its market presence. The company operates on 100% renewable energy and has implemented on-site wastewater treatment systems to minimize waste and lower operational costs. In 2022 alone, Dynamic remanufactured over 120,000 transmissions and processed 37,559 tons of remanufactured products, showcasing its significant impact. This serves as a strong example for other manufacturers looking to adopt cost-effective, environmentally responsible practices. Dynamic Manufacturing’s innovations benefit both consumers and businesses. In the short term, Dynamic’s initiatives lead to immediate cost savings by reducing waste disposal expenses and energy consumption. Over the long term, these efforts will establish Dynamic as a leader in sustainable automotive manufacturing, further reducing its carbon footprint, extending the lifespan of automotive components, and eliminating hazardous waste streams. As Chad Richardson highlighted, “We are tracking our improvements year over year, reducing waste streams, and ensuring our sustainability efforts go beyond just compliance—they create real change.” By continuously refining its processes, Dynamic ensures lasting benefits while setting new standards for sustainability.

Further demonstrating its commitment, Dynamic earned the Eco Vadis Bronze Medal in 2022 for its sustainability achievements and was recognized by ComEd as a Smart Energy User for its efforts in reducing energy consumption through LED lighting upgrades and HVAC improvements. Internally, the company tracks kilowatt usage, waste stream reductions, and therms per unit produced, ensuring continuous year-over-year improvements. These measurable results highlight Dynamic’s significant contributions to sustainability and operational efficiency.

Business benefit

Dynamic Manufacturing's innovative approach to remanufacturing has yielded significant economic and competitive advantages for its clients. By refurbishing automotive components, the company offers cost-effective alternatives to purchasing new parts, enabling businesses to allocate resources toward capital improvements or market expansion. This strategy has established Dynamic as a trusted partner for automakers seeking sustainable solutions, thereby enhancing customer loyalty and broadening market reach.

The company's dedication to sustainability is evident in its operations across eight manufacturing sites, encompassing over 1,250,000 square feet of floor space. Dynamic Manufacturing employs approximately 1,600 associates, contributing to an estimated annual revenue of $156 million. This commitment not only reduces manufacturing costs but also minimizes environmental impact. Dynamic's focus on green infrastructure underscores the economic viability of remanufacturing, offering consumers and businesses a sustainable approach that fosters economic growth.

Internally, Dynamic Manufacturing emphasizes an associate-focused culture, recognizing that employee well-being is integral to the company's success. By maintaining industry-leading quality standards and fostering a family-oriented work environment, the company has achieved high employee retention rates. This supportive atmosphere encourages innovation and dedication among staff, further driving the company's growth and its ability to deliver exceptional value to customers and the environment alike.

Social and environmental benefit

Dynamic Manufacturing’s commitment to environmental sustainability and social responsibility is evident in its proactive initiatives to protect the environment, health, and safety of its stakeholders. The company adheres to strict pollution prevention (PP) objectives, environmental laws, and ethical business practices to support a circular economy. By implementing compliance and observation mechanisms, Dynamic ensures continuous measurement, testing, and tracking of emissions and environmental conditions. These efforts include comprehensive recycling programs for paper, cardboard, plastic, and foam packaging, significantly reducing landfill waste and benefiting the surrounding community.

Through sustainability-driven innovations, Dynamic Manufacturing has achieved measurable environmental impact. The company replaced conventional bulbs with energy-efficient LEDs, cutting energy consumption by 30%. Additionally, its compressed air leak detection and repair program resulted in a 4% reduction in energy usage. Another notable achievement is the treatment of more than 2.5 million gallons of wastewater using on-site pre-treatment systems, eliminating the need for off-site disposal. These actions underscore Dynamic’s dedication to sustainability while maintaining high-quality manufacturing standards.

Dynamic further demonstrates its commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles by engaging with CDP and EcoVadis, two global sustainability rating platforms. Operating from a 250,000 sq. ft. facility in suburban Chicago, the company integrates sophisticated engineering and machining solutions to optimize product lifecycles.
