Summary

Sunshine Farm Philippines is a sunflower farm that hires employees with disabilities. The business supports Sustainable Development Goals 5, 8, 10, and 15 by providing job opportunities for people with disabilities of all genders. The farm cultivates flowers, beautifies the environment, and is vital in promoting biodiversity and preserving local ecosystems.

Innovation

Just two hours from Manila, Sunshine Farm Philippines is a sanctuary for sunflower enthusiasts and People with Disabilities (PWDs). It features a field of stunning sunflower blooms that bring new hope to all who visit. This inspiring place began with the vision of one woman determined to make a difference in the lives of those with special needs and different abilities.

Rhodora Palomar-Fresnedi is a passionate advocate for the marginalised sector of society. Driven by her passion, she founded a sunflower farm with the deep-seated intention of sustainably assisting PWDs by providing them with jobs. She aligned this initiative with Sunshine Farm's vision of "Planting seeds of hope and happiness because, for PWDs, hope is a job."

From its humble beginnings with just two PWD employees, the farm has blossomed. The first batch of seeds sprouted into beautiful blooms just 45 days later, attracting a flurry of butterflies and bees. Visitors flocked to the farm, drawn by the vibrant sunflowers and the opportunity to purchase them.

Today, the farm is a bustling hub of activity, employing six (6) PWD workers. Each worker has a unique role, from planting seeds to welcoming guests, and even creating beautiful sunflower-themed souvenirs. At Sunshine Farm, sunflowers are a year-round affair, with three sunflower mazes blooming in rotation.

Planting Seeds of Hope and Happiness

For PWDs, hope is a job.

Inspiration

Rhodora Palomar-Fresnedi, born in Tiaong, Quezon, is globally recognised as an expert in diversity and inclusivity. After spending 20 years abroad, she strongly desired to return to her roots. "I want to contribute to the development of Asian countries, particularly the Philippines," Rhodora enthusiastically expressed.

While employed at Unilab, she established Project Inclusion to promote equal opportunity for all employees. In 2011, she pioneered the Unilab Foundation Inc. to promote a healthier Philippines through a holistic approach.

However, she believed she was capable of doing more. A happy accident led to the establishment of Sunshine Farm. Rhodora was invited to a lunch meeting by a friend with an autistic son, where she met a horticulturist and a sunflower expert. Fast-forward to today, and she has merged her passion for flowers with her devotion to aiding people with different abilities, transforming her dream into Sunshine Farm Philippines.

Overall impact

Sunshine Farm Philippines promotes three key messages about PWDs displayed at the farm entrance. The first message is, "May kakayahan ang may kapansanan (people with disabilities are capable)." This statement implies that having a disability does not mean one cannot contribute to the community. The PWDs have unique talents. According to Rhodora, "Companies miss out on opportunities when they don't hire people with disabilities because, in her experience, they are more disciplined, on time, and pay more attention to the details of their work."

The second key message is, “Nagbibigay hindi lang nabibigyan (givers, not just receivers)." Sunshine Farm has stunning sunflower fields grown by people with disabilities, as well as sunflower-themed artworks and murals created by them. If given the opportunity, people with disabilities can produce something of great beauty.

The third key message is, "Inspirasyon hindi lang obligation (inspiration, not just obligation)"; the transformation stories of the PWDs on the farm will give you inspiration and a different perspective in life. For instance, the PWD employees at Sunshine Farm used to be shy and quiet, but now they confidently talk to guests daily. They smile at people who come to see the sunflowers, tell them a thing or two about the farm, and lead them through the picturesque sunflower mazes. Their stories encourage others by demonstrating that navigating challenging times with the proper support and opportunities is possible.

Business benefit

Rhodora's lifelong objective is to create inclusive communities. Her mantra is that "Everyone should be able to say that I am valued, I belong, and I make a difference." A gap exists with PWDs because employing them is often more challenging. However, overlooking them is a missed opportunity for businesses because it wastes talent. PWDs can make outstanding contributions if given the chance.

Businesses must shift their view of PWDs from charity beneficiaries to active change agents who can advocate for themselves and find fulfilling work. To fully appreciate PWDs' value, businesses should have the courage to hire them. Research has indicated that employing people with disabilities results in higher retention rates since these workers typically hold their jobs longer, lowering company turnover costs. Furthermore, employing PWDs enhances the business's reputation and boosts employee morale, resulting in a more stable and productive workforce. "Dare to hire. You will only recognise their unique and exemplary contributions when you give them a chance." Rhodora said with conviction.

Social and environmental benefit

Other businesses are attempting to replicate what Sunshine Farm pioneered. Before the pandemic, Rhodora communicated with individuals who aimed to replicate Sunshine Farm in different regions of the country. She was enthusiastic because it would mean more employment opportunities for people with disabilities. However, Rhodora reminded them, "Your hearts should be in it; otherwise, the project would be short-lived and unsustainable."

Sunshine Farm Philippines and other green spaces improve urban and rural areas' social and environmental fabric. Sunshine Farm's vibrant sunflower fields draw visitors from different walks of life, providing a peaceful place to relax, temporarily disconnect from the hustle and bustle of city life, and connect with nature. These green spaces serve as educational platforms, especially for children and young adults, about agriculture, sustainability, and environmental preservation.
