Innovation

Founded in 2002, Sequil Systems, Inc., provides energy and environmental consulting services to architects, engineers and construction companies. As one of the first organizations certified by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) in the State of Florida, and the first to receive LEED “Proven Provider” certification, Sequil has been a pioneer in green building practices in the Sunshine State. Beginning with a desire to be a “positive influence in people’s lives,” Sequil’s Managing Principal, Jef Conley, launched his firm with a vision to create good not only for the company, but also its employees, the community in which they worked and the planet as a whole. This passion led Sequil to become an early firm certified as a Benefit Corporation, or “B Corp” by B Labs, a nonprofit promoting business as a force for good, benefiting all stakeholders. In like fashion, Sequil became the first legally recognized Benefit Corporation under new legislation in the State of Florida in 2014. One of its greatest recent accomplishments is the design and construction of the new Miami Science Museum, one of the most ambitious and innovative green buildings of its large-scale to date. Conley is equally proud of their creation of “Plurabus,” a proprietary business management system that has allowed their small firm to remain competitive in much larger-scale projects.

Inspiration

Working as a young architect in the mid-1990’s for a larger firm, Conley was introduced to green building practices through the design of an “eco-friendly” Native American museum in the Northeast. This experience resonated with his own values and he wondered, “Why don’t we do this for everything?” Inspired early in his career by supervisors with excellent skills in building relationships, nurturing employees and exercising creativity and innovation. Conley eventually struck out on his own, creating a firm, Sequil, that sought to “play the long game,” providing broad global benefit in its work, dedicating itself to providing high-quality work for its clients, and investing in the development and well-being of its employees. Experience in 2007 as a team member to former U.S. Vice President Al Gore’s “Climate Project” was also pivotal for Conley. He began to see the opportunity to change his own life practices and inspire others. He also recognized the economic opportunities available through innovation in renewable energy, ecologically sustainable construction and the new shared economy. Yet, in its work, Sequil looks not for single large innovations to achieve its design goals, but finds value in the smaller “stepping stones” that, placed together, create significant change.

Overall impact

Through creation of a positive, creative, and collaborative environment, Sequil provides the best solutions to clients committed to the most energy efficient and environmentally sustainable buildings possible. In turn, these clients fulfill their goals of providing a beneficial impact on their communities and the world.

Business benefit

By pursuing development that invests extensively in the quality of its work and the well-being of the employees that produce it, Sequil has created a highly sustainable business model for itself.

Social and environmental benefit

By focusing early on sustainable energy and environmental design, Sequil has aligned itself with a solidly profitable and blossoming market that also provides broad benefit for its clients and the communities in which they exist and, ultimately, the global environment.
