Summary

For the UN SDG's, Halal Wayz offers seasonal and promotional events to donate food and money to charity. Halal Wayz is combating world hunger by giving away food to the homeless and the needy. They strive to end world hunger and help those in need.

Innovation

Halal Wayz was founded by a student at Stony Brook University, Yama Said, who aimed to give back to the community. After a long journey, he met his goal of opening up a halal restaurant near the campus. The innovation of this restaurant began in 2021 and has continued to excel greatly. It is extremely beneficial to the community that enjoys halal food and those who would like to experience the rich flavors. The menu includes diverse options that are familiar to many and intriguing as well.

It is located in Deer Park, Long Island and has made a name for itself in the short time that it has been there so far. It is described by the owner to be a hit on weekends as it contains many items that everyone knows and loves, such as chicken wings, fries, sandwiches, chicken over rice, lamb over rice and much more. This business is contributing to help end hunger for many, not just paying customers. The business often gives away food to those who are homeless and the needy. Halal Wayz cares for everyone and supports ending world hunger and poverty.

Inspiration

The leader was inspired by the lack of halal food options at his school, Stony Brook University. The nearest halal food place was quite a few miles away and the owner, Yama wanted to create a closer option that all parties can enjoy. Not only would this bring in Muslim customers, but also non-Muslim customers who enjoy halal foods. Also, being denied a halal option on campus by the Stony Brook University board sparked even more of an inspiration to make this work and do well by his fellow students seeking a food option. Also, the owner was inspired to make something of his predicament and build a closer bond with the community.

Overall impact

Because Halal Wayz offers a unique dining option that caters to students' diverse dietary needs and cultural backgrounds, several positive outcomes have ensued. Firstly, the revenue raised from Halal Wayz's operations contributes not only to the sustenance of the business itself but also to the support of charitable causes, such as seasonal and promotional events to combat world hunger. This dual-purpose approach not only generates financial resources but also fosters a sense of social responsibility within the community.

The establishment of Halal Wayz has led to the employment of individuals within the community, thereby creating job opportunities and contributing to local economic growth. Through its inclusive approach to food options, Halal Wayz has also increased student retention by providing a dining experience that aligns with their cultural and religious preferences. This fosters a sense of belonging and community among students, enhancing their overall well-being and satisfaction with campus life.

Moreover, Halal Wayz's presence on the Stony Brook University campus has opened new markets for culturally diverse food options, thereby enriching the culinary landscape of the campus and attracting students who seek a variety of dining choices. By addressing the unmet need for halal food options on campus, Halal Wayz has not only filled a niche but has also paved the way for new investment opportunities in the food service industry, particularly in catering to diverse dietary preferences and cultural backgrounds. Overall, Halal Wayz's innovative approach to dining has brought about positive social, economic, and cultural impacts within the community.

Business benefit

Due to the business opening up in an area where there are no other halal options nearby, this business has attracted a lot of business in the three years that it has been around. The business of halal food has grown to tremendous popularity over the years and is often a staple food item of New York. Although no specifics were given, revenue is doing well says the owner and has only gone up over time. The business had a bit of a slow beginning as does any business, but quickly got over that once social media was used to promote the business and that the owner was passionate about making his dreams come true.

Customers are happy which keeps the employees and owners happy here at Halal Wayz. The business is family run and all of those who work there are family and as long as business is good, the employees are doing well. The restaurant is always looking for the next food trend to hop on and have their own spin on. They aim to create foods that are fun and tasty, but are still halal.

Social and environmental benefit

Halal Wayz allows for students to experience a culturally diverse food option on a local college campus. By being conscious of different food options that are offered to a student body of different backgrounds, it allows for students to participate in cultural appreciation and recognition. This would promote inclusivity, and would prevent potential instances of discrimination when it comes to options related to food on campus.

Halal Wayz also allows a food option that meets the dietary considerations and restrictions of Islamic faith to make sure that there are options for students that prioritize their religious practice, especially during times of holiday and tradition. Halal Wayz also promotes other cultural food backgrounds to do the same by filling a niche community need of food options that must fit within religious dietary restrictions.

Allowing Halal Wayz access on the Stony Brook campus is a form of supporting local small businesses by allowing them to operate on campus and profit from student participation in dining programs. It also serves as a staple of entrepreneurship for students who may be interested in pursuing a business in the food service or dining industry.
