Summary

In 2015, the UN approved the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a global plan consisting of 17 goals aimed at improving people's quality of life and preserving the environment. Universidad Iberoamericana Torreón actively contributes to this initiative, promoting a more just and inclusive society while adopting practices that respect and care for the environment. Through actions such as providing quality education, employing sustainable technologies for water treatment, using solar energy, and supporting vulnerable groups, this university demonstrates its commitment to sustainability and community well-being. Its example inspires young people to be agents of change, making it a reference in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Innovation

Universidad Iberoamericana is always seeking innovation as it strives to showcase its achievements to the university community in different ways, and not only that, it is also continuously improving in matters related to caring for our common home within our institution. Integrating the different areas of the university.

The rector tells us that one of their main ways of innovating was by creating an application that helps the community know the intensity of ultraviolet rays and what actions are advisable to take depending on the intensity. In this same area, the rector decided to include the university in sustainable global rankings to see how it could improve and how it was evaluated. Being the only university in the state participating in these sustainable global evaluations, it started as the 263rd worldwide, 10th nationally, and first place in Coahuila and Torreón. This year, it has managed to climb to the 190th place worldwide, 6th nationally, and 1st in Coahuila and Torreón. It is evident that the university is innovating at the state level as it was the first, and from there, more universities joined the ranking.

From Laguna To The Summit

Inspiration

The rector indicates that a key aspect for implementing these models is experience, defining it as a combination of miles traveled in the workplace and a willingness to get things done. He recounts that before assuming his position, he used to say, "If I were the rector, I would do this..." So, when he became rector, he set out with his team to put his ideas into action. He wanted to implement models seen in IBERO Mexico City and IBERO Puebla at IBERO Torreón, while also ensuring to meet the needs of collaborators and students.

Overall impact

The impact that has been achieved is the creation of a sense of belonging to the university community. We learn a lot from everything the university does. Knowing that students are part of a highly sustainable university in a constant state of improvement is something that is not only communicated to the students themselves but also to their families and all members who step onto the university grounds.

Being aware that the university leads a global indicator in Mexico makes the educational community proud to belong. The Jesuit universities lead in this area, making them stand out in many aspects and gaining recognition not only nationally but also internationally.

Business benefit

The implementation of these models at IBERO Torreón has made the university more attractive to collaborators, students, and external users. The rector indicates that as a result, there has been a 12% increase in enrollment over the past 3 years. Furthermore, as mentioned earlier, the university is seen as an example to follow by other institutions due to its position in global indicators.

Social and environmental benefit

The initiative of IBERO, which has worked as a sustainable model to combat climate change, focuses on reducing carbon dioxide emissions, an environmental issue affecting the Laguna region. Thanks to the university, significant measures have been implemented, such as the wastewater treatment plant, which helps eliminate pollutants and provides clean water. Additionally, the installed solar panels contribute to renewable energy generation, thus reducing pollution. The rector has communicated to us that these advancements have had a significant impact on regional businesses, receiving recognition and congratulations from the university, which has motivated and promoted responsible water usage and environmental care.
