Summary

Found Surface is a sustainable fashion manufacturing brand that is reimagining how clothing is made by prioritizing zero-waste production and eco-friendly materials like seaweed fiber and algae-based ink. By keeping all manufacturing local and minimizing environmental harm, the company directly supports UN SDGs like Climate Action (SDG 13), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11). Their approach proves that ethical, innovative fashion can be both environmentally responsible and socially inclusive.

Innovation

Found Surface was founded with the mission to redesign how clothing is produced, focusing on sustainable materials and local manufacturing. We had the opportunity to speak with Gianmarco Rinaldi, who is the company’s Director of Business Development. He walked us through several of Found Surface’s key innovations that are shaping a more ethical fashion industry.

One of the most notable aspects of Found Surface’s innovation is their commitment to zero-waste production. Through the use of advanced knitting techniques using a Stoll Machine and a partnership with a local knitting mill, they are able to repurpose their minimal scrap fabrics into new garments. They also choose biodegradable and plant-based materials such as seaweed fiber and algae ink, which reduce harm to the environment during both the production process and product lifestyle.

Additionally, all of Found Surface's manufacturing is done locally in Cleveland, which dramatically cuts down on carbon emissions associated with global shipping. Their designs are also made with inclusivity in mind. They feature magnetic clasps for accessibility and gender-neutral silhouettes. By addressing both environmental and social needs, Found Surface’s innovation is a holistic approach to better clothing with an emphasis on designing with the planet and people in mind.

Found Surface Innovation Story

Inspiration

The innovation at Found Surface was born from a desire to rethink how clothing is made. It was created not just to reduce harm, but to build a fashion model that supports the health of both the people and the planet. When we spoke with Gianmarco, who plays a key role in developing sustainable solutions for the company, he made it clear that the driving force behind their work is a sense of responsibility for future generations. “We don’t want future generations dealing with the problems we’re creating now,” he shared. This reflects the company’s core commitment to long-term sustainability.

This mindset fuels their constant experimentation with new materials and production processes. Rather than following trends or the industry norms, they approach design by asking how each step in the process can be improved. From algae-based inks to zero-waste garment construction, each decision is made with intention. During our interview, Gianmarco summed up this philosophy with a simple but powerful piece of advice: “Don’t be afraid to innovate.” Their willingness to think differently is what sets Found Surface apart. They’re not just trying to do less harm; they’re working towards an entirely new way of making clothes that aligns with their environmental and social values.

Overall impact

Found Surface’s innovation has created both immediate and long-term impacts. In the short term, their approach has reduced waste at every level of production by incorporating fabric scraps into new products and minimizing shipping emissions through local manufacturing. Their zero-waste packaging has also contributed to lowering their overall environmental footprint.

In the long term, their influence may reach beyond their own company. Found Surface is part of a growing movement encouraging both consumers and producers to think differently about fashion. As sustainable materials become more normalized and local production becomes more practical, other companies might adopt similar practices. Gianmarco shared that they hope to inspire the industry to do better, and their transparency around materials and methods lays the groundwork for that.

There is growing evidence that consumers are responding positively to these efforts. People are increasingly willing to invest in quality, sustainability, and transparency. The demand for more ethical and environmentally conscious products is rising, and Found Surface is meeting that need with their innovative approach to fashion.

Business benefit

Because Found Surface invested in sustainable innovation from the beginning, they have built a loyal customer base that values environmental responsibility. Their choice to use high-quality, durable materials ensures that their garments last longer, which adds value to the products and supports repeat customers who appreciate sustainability and longevity.

This innovation has also opened doors for collaborations with local engineers, artists, and mills supporting Cleveland’s creative and economic ecosystem and aligning with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). Gianmarco mentioned that working closely with local partners has not only increased efficiency but also brought fresh perspectives to their product design process. These partnerships have allowed the company to scale up while maintaining control over production quality and ethical practices.

Additionally, the brand’s unique identity as a forward-thinking, sustainable fashion company has made them attractive to new markets. Their inclusive design approach (gender-neutral silhouettes and adaptive features) means they serve a broader audience. As public awareness of sustainability continues to grow. Found Surface’s values-based innovation gives them a strong competitive advantage.

Social and environmental benefit

Found Surface’s innovation has a significant impact on both the environment and society. Their commitment to sustainability starts with the materials they use (100% cotton, seaweed fiber, etc.), which all contribute to a lower ecological footprint. By avoiding synthetic blends like polyester and using natural dyes, they minimize microplastic pollution and chemical runoff that often results from traditional clothing production. Found Surface also keeps all production local here in Cleveland, Ohio, which reduces the carbon emissions typically associated with international shipping.

Beyond materials and location, their zero-waste production methods address the fashion industry’s ongoing waste crisis. Garment scraps are repurposed into new items and their packaging is designed with sustainability in mind. This intentional approach helps reduce landfill contribution and promotes a circular production model. By doing this, Found Surface not only creates a healthier planet but also raises consumer awareness about the hidden cost of fast fashion. Their innovation aligns directly with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), making them a brand that is actively shaping a more sustainable future.
