Filling the Gap Between Formal Education and Professional Work

Inspiration

Started from personal experience, Mr Wendy Pratama is an architect graduated from University in Bandung. After he graduated, his mother ask to renovate her house. At the time, he can design but when he want to start to renovate the house, he confused. Where should he start from? Who is the contractor?, how much the material will be used? Finally, he is not renovating the house and he realized that it seems there is something wrong. How come that he graduated as an architect, but he can’t help his mother to renovate the house. After that, he discussed with his friends and finally found the fact that there are missing gap between formal education in reality life. Furthermore, after he realize that there are missing gap, in 2014 he established "Lingkaran" to solve the problem. "By creating "Lingkaran" I hopesthat there are no peoples who have similar experience like me." said Mr Wendy.

Another inspiration that Mr Wendy still running this business until now is he heard success story from the "Lingkaran" facilitators who teach packaging design, his name is Mr. Raymond. He told to Mr Wendy that one of the participant who joined the program held by "Lingkaran" named Mr. Galih succeed in running the business after having a collaboration with Mr Raymond. Mr Galih succeed sell his product which was originally only sold in small stalls, now he can sell the product in the big supermarket in Jakarta. This story is become "aha moment" to Mr Wendy and make him believed that what was done by him in running this business model are right.

Overall impact

In last 2 or 3 years, workshop is booming in Jakarta, every knowledge can be explained by workshop. New type of job arise like data scientist, social media specialist and many others which the formal education formal education has not been able to facilitate it. So the short term impact of "Lingkaran" business model is to support peoples with knowledge and skills needed by the new type of job as mentioned above.

Furthermore, for the long term impact "Lingkaran" will help human resources in Indonesia primarily in creative industry to develop their knowledge and skills and finally make Indonesian economy growth. Creative industry contribute big number for Gross Domestic Product of Indonesia, and they hope they can help human resources to become competitive in national an even international scale in order to contribute more to the Indonesian GDP.

The evidence shows that this impact occurs is, now "Lingkaran" opens an average of 20 classes of knowledge sharing each month. This fact can indicate that people need non-formal education to develop their skills and knowledge to fit what is required in professional works.

Business benefit

Revenue stream from this business model generally come from 2 segment, first is from business to business scheme and business to community scheme. At the first time, "Lingkaran" running this business with business to community scheme. They realized that they can't get a lot of revenue from this scheme. By running this scheme, the look for community database and activation their brand. Instead of having a lot of revenue, the can get database and also can get their brand acknowledgement and finally the big company come to "Lingkaran" and ask them to provide the company like training, culture activation, corporate innovation and others.

For Business to Community scheme, the revenue is coming from participants enrollment fee in joining the program held by "Lingkaran". Since they help the peoples and community to develop their skills and knowledge especially in non formal education, they don't look for big profits but the important is the business can be sustainable and will grow in the future.

Talking about revenue, for illustration as mentioned before, "Lingkaran" can held 20 classes every month. And if every class consist of 15-20 participants with enrollment fee Rp. 300 thousand, "Lingkaran" will generate revenue around Rp 90 -120 million per month. And Mr Wendy believed that this business model can be implemented in the other area in Indonesia.

Social and environmental benefit

This business model of "Lingkaran" will fill the gap between formal education and what is required by the professional works for the society. "Lingkaran" giving three benefit for the society, there are Motivation, Network and Knowledge. By given those benefits, people or society will increase their skill and knowledge in order to fit with professional works needed. And finally will increase and boost Indonesian economic growth.
