Summary

AlJunishar Mosa, through his experience and knowledge, has educated a farming housewife and her neighbors to process coffee by harvesting, sunning, and roasting beans the right way until they are green. As a result, they can produce high quality coffee at a high price which can increase their quality of life.

Innovation

Since 2014, Mosa has been educating, training and continuously monitoring Sri Wahyuni, the farmer's housewife, and her community at Tanah Gayo to process coffee beans the right way. Initially, this action was inspired by the lack of good quality coffee to supply his cafe, Fakultas Kopi.

Lack of knowledge can cause low prosperity. Tanah Gayo produces Arabica coffee with a higher price than Robusta coffee, but if the process is not done properly, optimum benefits are not realized and the coffee will be sold at a lower price. Besides dealing with production, Mosa has solved the marketing of the coffee beans as well.

Inspiration

Business is created by knowing costumers' needs and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the endeavor. "Providing good quality coffee, increases the quality of life," Mosa noted.

Overall impact

This innovation has increased coffee farmers' income. In the beginning, they could only sell the dry coffee beans for 60-67 K per kilogram. Now, they can sell high quality dry coffee beans for up to 160 K per kilogram. In the short term, the innovation will support the opening of new coffee shops in new locations in Bali, Bandung and other cities to promote and educate customers about high quality coffee. The long term plan is to create more markets by supplying coffee beans to other local and international shops.

Business benefit

This innovation has solved Fakultas Kopi's problem on the source of Arabica coffee. In the beginning, getting good quality coffee required higher prices due to its rarity. Now they can get high quality coffee sustainably with more affordable prices.

Social and environmental benefit

For Wahyuni and her community, they get more income but don't need to go far from their homes. With this additional income, they can increase quality of food, nutrition and education for their children.
