Scania's aim with their innovations is to extend the vehicles' life-span and have low-carbon transportation. They have been successful in introducing the Euro 6 engines and are constantly since then, trying to improve low-carbon transport solutions. Therefore innovating in their industry and thriving it towards clean energy and climate action.
Scania is approaching low-carbon transport through renewable fuels, having engines running on biodiesel, compressed and liquefied biogas, natural gas, and ethanol.
Similarly, Scania is using electrification to reduce the carbon emissions. They have been taking different actions when it comes to sustainable and electrically-powered transport solutions. A lot of research, projects, and demonstrations have helped in supporting the idea of having electric vehicles which will in return reduce emissions and noise pollution. Scania’s first tests are electric busses that run on batteries and will need 10 minutes to charge and can then run every 15 minutes for 100 trips a day.
The need to fulfill their customers' efficiency and profitability since it is part of Scania's culture to 'have their customers first'.
In 2014, Scania set a goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 25 percent by 2020. Vehicles that are driven electrically can reduce fuels emissions between 80 to 90 percent. The vehicles that are 100 percent electric will have zero emissions due to the innovative technology called hydrogen fuel-cell technology, where only water is emitted from the truck.
Since Scania's innovations thrive towards the reduction of CO2, they benefit the society by providing trucks all around the world that cause less pollution. This can have a big impact since the transportation industry is one of the main sources of CO2 pollution. As Scania's customers start replacing their old trucks with the new CO2 friendly trucks provided by Scania, and because Scania has customers from all around the globe, this innovation will have a large benefit on the global environment.
