Summary

Not like other ordinary English course provider in Indonesia, BEC (Basic English Course) which establish 40 years ago having a unique method on their learning process. Usually, English course in Indonesia is a part time course or extra course beside school time. The students only come to the training center twice a week for max 2 hours to learn about English language.

Innovation

BEC approach is more in the intensive way, like a school program, all students need to attend the class everyday for 5 days a week and having twice a day class meeting for more than 1,5 hours per meeting and all the students must stay in area near to the BEC center in local residential houses and using a uniform daily every time they come into the class. It is a mandatory to speak English every time they are in BEC area. After many years, BEC method which is more into intensive communication and conversation approach are proven successful. This method is being copied by other competitors currently.

Quote from the Interview : “ For years I discovered that 3 things people want, one they want to be smart, two they want to achieve it as fast as possible, and the third they want it cheap. But the most important is that they want to be smart and instantly can use the skill. “

Inspiration

In 1976 was his first opportunity to teach English to two students after learning English with KH. Ahmad Yazid. Two college students from Surabaya came to learn English with KH. Ahmad Yazid in order to pass their final exam. KH. Ahmad Yazid was out of town so asked Mr. Kalend to taught them. Using 300 group of questions from previous years brought them Mr. Kalend taught led them to answer all the questions in 5 days. One month later, he got a good news from the college students that they pass the final exam. That was the event that inspiring Mr. Kalend to take an opportunity to start a Basic English Course business in June 1977.

Quote from the Interview : “ I was wondering, those college students were unable to understand English correctly how about other people that doesn’t have good education background. I saw an opportunity at that time. ”

Overall impact

The existence BEC in the area giving a big impact to the neighborhood. The students of BEC need many facilities for supporting their learning process, such as : transportation, housing, meal, stationary, copy machines, laundry, etc. The policy of BEC is to share with other local people to provide the facilities. This policy creating an opportunity for others to start their business for supporting BEC students.

Business benefit

The BEC method which required students to stay for minimum 6 months for the basic program and up to one year until they finish all the programs creating a continue and sustain income stream for the company. Because of the high rate of success for the graduate students for getting the job opportunity makes BEC the most wanted English Course provider in the area.

This situation makes BEC overloaded demand so they start to open more branch in the area. Not only BEC that using this method, now many new English Course provider start to copy the method and also providing all the facility end-to-end.

Social and environmental benefit

The innovation of BEC method to accelerate the learning process and more into conversation approach creating a benefit for the students to have an opportunity to monetizing their skill faster.

The existences of BEC and their innovation in learning method is also creating a benefit for other people who live in the neighborhood to have a sustain business and increase their living standard. Many of them starting to have a better living, better source of income and success business model.

Mr. Kalend was born in Kutai, East Borneo. Having a background as a wood cutter in Borneo’s deep forest, he was experiencing a very hard work as a labor and witnessing a cruel mafia dominating the business. Wishing a better life and opportunity, in 1972 he migrated to Java island specifically in Pare village, Kediri, East Java and met local religious leader, KH. Ahmad Yazid who was able to speak in 9 different languages. This event led him to change his life and becoming a leader in English course business in that area and bale to influence all villagers to speak and learn English. That’s how they get the name as “English Village”
