Summary

There were two innovations that the company had launched. The first is NyiMas Program in collaboration with PT Aneka Tambang Logam Mulia (A gold company in Indonesia) in a program to save waste with gold proceeds. The program was called “NyiMas (Nyimpan Emas or "Saving Gold"). In the program, residents who saved waste regularly for six months would receive their savings in the form of gold. The second program is the Waste Bank Academy Program. According to the CEO, the program currently serves 527 active customers with a service coverage area in East Jakarta. Plastic Smart Cities activities in DKI Jakarta were carried out by Bank Sampah Gunung Emas YPK during the contract period from November 2022 to February 2023. The program consists of socialization and education activities related to urban farming activities, strengthening cooperative institutions and optimizing the activities. Bank Sampah Gunung Emas (Waste to Gold Bank) also actively carries out the education and socialization process regarding waste management in schools in the East Jakarta area. There are 50 schools (from elementary to high school) who are supporting Plastic Smart Cities with a focus on waste management.

Innovation

Realizing that plastic waste may cause damage to the environment and the surrounding nature, action and real activities to reduce the negative impact of plastic waste on the environment is very important. Bank Sampah Gunung Emas accepts plastic waste savings, ranging from various bottles, glasses, children's toys and tools made of plastic. During its partnership with PSC and the WWF Indonesia Foundation, the Gunung Emas Waste Bank has felt an increase in organizational capacity, especially in terms of preparing financial reports, activity reports and creating sustainable business models. "We received a lot of additional knowledge obtained through our involvement in the training organized by WWF-Indonesia. Among others, organizational management training carried out with the PPM Jakarta Management School, from September to November 2022." as mentioned by the CEO.

Inspiration

During the interview the CEO Vera said, "One of the important investments in this business is to improve the Human Resource skills, because by upscaling the soft skill and knowledge about waste management, it will increase the cooperation, environmental awareness and finally will increase the income of every stakeholders."

Overall impact

The impact of innovation in the waste bank academy will give some benefit to the Human Resources Development. The Academy can provide more comprehensive training and knowledge to Bank Sampah HR, so that they are more capable of carrying out good waste management. This supports SDG 4: Quality Education. Future cooperation is to establish closer cooperation with other Bank Sampah, including those participating in the Academy, to share experiences, knowledge, and resources. This supports SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 17: Partnership for the Goals. "We are hoping that the Academy can increase public awareness of the importance of good waste management, so that more people are involved in the efforts to protect the environment." This supports SDG 12: Responsible consumption and Production and no.15 Life on Land.  "We hope that with better waste management, Waste Bank can increase community's income through waste collection and sales. This aligns with SDG 1: No Poverty, SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 3: Good Health and Well Being and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth," uttered by the CEO.

Business benefit

The innovation introduced through the Nyimas program at Bank Sampah Gunung Emas, generated strong interest and engagement from the community. In the cooperation in 2017, at least 1,800 grams were obtained by 800 members within 2 years. From waste bank to academy, the company was able to scale up from the CSR training (non-commercial) to commercial trainer and get more income from the program. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) has named the Gunung Emas Waste Bank in East Jakarta as the Best Waste Bank 2023 in Indonesia.

Social and environmental benefit

The Gunung Emas Waste Bank innovation program benefits both society and the environment by promoting community-based waste management and reducing landfill waste. It encourages households to sort and deposit recyclable waste, communities earn economic value while reducing materials from the landfills. This also increases recycling rates and promotes pro-environmental behavior within the community
