A skimmer is a device that collects and removes oil from the surface of the water. The way that oleophilic skimmers operate is on the principle of oil adhesion to a rotating surface, “the rotating surface lifts oil out of the water to an oil removal device , which then transfers it into a collector”. Oleophilic skimmers usually achieve the highest ratio of recovered oil in relation to free or en-trained water. On top of this technique, with the authorization of the US Government, ES&H uses chemical dispersants for oil spill clean ups. Chemical dispersants are used for the purpose of accelerating the natural dispersion of oil in water. Dispersants contain molecules with a water-compatible end and an oil-compatible end, the molecules attach to the oil, reducing the inter facial tension between oil and water, breaking up the oil slick.
