Summary

Indonesia has a population of more than 266 million people, home to hundreds of ethnic groups speaking many different languages. However, the gap between the poor and the rich is very huge and due to the very dense population healthcare is still limited in some remote areas. Although the government supports healthcare through its program of ownership of national healthcare insurance (BPJS), there are still many people who need immediate services but do not have national health insurance because of administrative or other reasons. WeCare.id exists as a civil support to the government program.

Innovation

WeCare.id is one of the firsts healthcare crowdfunding portals in Indonesia. This innovation is a combination between cyberspace and financial technology (fin-tech) that is designed with the purpose of raising funds for helping others in medical fields. This portal allows people who want to do good but have limitation to do contribute in person and also allow those in need to get adequate, effective and immediate medical treatments.

Through WeCare.id, people can view the list and information of each patient, select a patient and easily donate starting from twenty-five thousand rupiah. WeCare.id is also open to all transactions conducted and displayed transparently on the website.

Another way to participate is to be a "Medicator", doctors and people with medical expertise in remote areas who find patients who have a prognosis or high possibility to be cured so they can continue a productive life.

Lastly, ordinary people can also participate as a "Catalyst", the ones who seek or find patients in need of healthcare services.

Crowdfunding Healthcare

Inspiration

Gigih Septianto as a Co-Founder explains that WeCare.id believes that every individual in Indonesia not only has the same right to receive health services, but also decent and optimal healthcare. His idea came up unexpectedly when he saw an unfortunate man asking for money on the streets while showing his medical x-ray, and as a result many people actually cared and gave him money. He thought that this would be the right way to seek help. As a computer science graduate, he said, “My ambition is to build technology for good.” He then met a young doctor named Mesty Ariotedjo who was also aware that many people especially in remote areas still have limited access to healthcare. Together they built this platform.

Overall impact

WeCare.id has successfully raised more than 3.8 billion rupiah for healthcare from 7700 donators and fund over than 320 patients spread across 15 provinces in Indonesia's peripheral areas and also big cities.

WeCare.id provides an easier way for people who care to help others specifically by donating their money for those who are unfortunate and whose medical expenses cannot be covered by government programs. WeCare.id supports the government in order for the public to get adequate health services.

Business benefit

WeCare.id’s revenue stream generated from the following:

  1. WeCare.id is implementing a 10% per-patient operational cost policy to support the operation of WeCare.id. They automatically add 10% of the medical expense amount. This cost is necessary to keep the organization working properly. The operational expenses are as follows; staff costs WeCare.id, server and website maintenance costs, office space (coworking space), marketing efforts (patient publications, campaigns, etc), and overhead costs such as administration and staff transportation WeCare.id during the verification and handling of active patients. All transactions conducted are displayed transparently on the website.
  2. WeCare.id also obtain revenue by profit sharing with a brand campaign. Usually, they join a campaign for 3 months or more and 15% - 20% of the sales go to WeCare.id.
  3. SEHATI is the WeCare.id’s latest innovation to maintain and finance healthcare in mutual assistance with a membership system (starting from 250.000 rupiah per month). Many patients in WeCare.id have received benefits from the donors. However, many of them still need additional costs to continue their life, for example to buy milk, medical equipment and other nutrition. In addition to being a regular donor for wecare.id patients, the member can also get benefits such as free doctor visits, free doctor consultation (by chat, text or phone), personalized health/meal plan, and monthly reports and impact reports. The majority of funds are used to donate to long-term patient needs at WeCare.id.

Social and environmental benefit

WeCare.id provides a new solution for people to donate in a more effective way. With the ease of being a donor, it is also increasing community awareness to help others who are in need of material assistance to seek treatment. More than 300 patients have already felt the benefits of this portal and also made it easier for seeking help.
