His “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle System” allowed him to reduce the cost and waste of unneeded materials and reuse the materials that were not used on a previous job site. He still recycles when needed at hardware stores or local businesses to reduce the waste of his company and receive some of the costs of materials back from these local businesses. In addition to this "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle System," John has taken pride in "building sustainably approached relationships with suppliers like Andersen and Ozinga." CastleHill works alongside Ozinga and Andersen who have expressed their commitment towards becoming sustainable in the construction industry. Ozinga is a concrete company located in the midwest region with a presence in South Florida. They have recognized the negative impact that concrete companies have had on the environment. By implementing more carbon-friendly initiatives, like their natural gas concrete mixing trucks, they are limiting the negative effects of the industry. CastleHill also sources windows from Andersen that are uniquely designed to limit energy waste in new homes.

The innovation emerged due to John Gavin’s “own personal drive for eco-friendly homes that are accessible and affordable”. He had observed the recent rise of costs in the construction industry and wanted to find a way to reduce the costs for consumers while still being an eco-friendly option. As he stated during the interview, “I realized the missing integration of sustainability in my business and I created this system of reduce, reuse, and recycle when it comes to building materials.” He went out on his journey to creating this “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle System” that would satisfy both of these problems. He also learned from other suppliers in the industry as they had already implemented energy-efficient practices. Using these suppliers allowed John to realize that they could partner with their suppliers to be sustainable and affordable.

He also strongly emphasized following this mission, stating, “I believe that this innovation reflects our company’s mission of bringing eco-friendly, high-quality housing within reach for more families, especially with the current state of the housing market.” Implementing the innovation and having it drive his mission was another key success factor in explaining why it was so important to him to reduce his costs while remaining sustainable.
