Summary

The main idea of this chain of restaurants is to provide quality meat with which its hamburgers are made; the meat has no preservatives, chemicals or hormones, being free of injection. Thus, it gives the opportunity to Mexican families to have a food dish that can give them a healthy moment. Always trying, The Food Box gives decent and fair treatment to all its employees to improve the economic growth of Mexican companies, since most of them are national, and through innovations, whether small or large, creates an impact on society. This restaurant is trying to take care to be responsible in its consumption and production.

Innovation

Dignified treatment of workers

The Food Box wants to be part of the change in the good management of human capital, giving them better wages and working hours. They seek dignified and fair treatment for all their employees, from the caregivers to their partners, practicing gender equality and seeing that it is not only a job but a formation of personal and professional life, forming their values: leadership, proactivity, attention to detail, sacrifice, teamwork, and training great people in the long run. A rather bold business decision was not to open on Sundays because they want to give their workers a day to enjoy their family, rest, and practice their faith.

"Vaquitas Felices" (Happy Cows)

This is a commercial slogan that they created to explain where their meat comes from, how cows live and how they are treated. "Vaquitas Felices" means that the animal lives in its normal, natural conditions, has space to walk and does not eat in the same place where there is the excrement of all cows because sometimes it can contaminate the meat because of the poor care that is given to the animals.

Suppliers

Bakers are expected to make daily bread for the hamburger, so customers eat a bun that just came out of the oven. Ninety-five percent of the products used by this restaurant come from local companies, which supports their country in terms of economic growth so that local businesses have more jobs and there is economic growth for Mexican families. Some examples of its local ingredients are vegetables, cheeses, organic eggs, bread, homemade ice cream, local beers, coffee and malt, among others.

Hormone-free meat

This is an important factor in their innovation and sustenance as a socially responsible company: its vendors provide meat without hormones. It is very common nowadays that all the products that come from the animal are full of hormones and antibiotics so that they have more weight, or so that the animals do not get sick easily.

Reduction of plastics (straws, plates)

Straws cannot be easily degraded, and changing a small habit can make a really big change. The Food Box was a pioneer in not serving straws unless the customer requested them, and this practice started to be replicated by more restaurants.

Open Sunday

They close on Sundays to allow employees to spend quality family time and practice their faith. Once a year, The Food Box opens on a Sunday and all the income they generate that day is donated to an NGO.

Juan Ángel also said: "Our mission in The Food Box is to positively influence our people and our environment; this refers to how we add value, as a person who enters the restaurant comes out with something that did not have before." Here we can see the importance in which he, as owner, has great influence on his employees and the values that he implements.

Other initiatives include making the boxes for delivering the hamburger out of recycled material (which was expensive at the beginning, but they could negotiate a price) and donating burned oil from the kitchen to another company to convert it into biodiesel.

So Much More Than Just a Burger

Inspiration

The company's inspiration came when the owner, Juan Ángel Martínez Ochoa, wanted to start a hamburger business. Working on this idea, he wanted a hamburger with organic meat, a product that was better and healthier, doing the least possible damage to our environment and the human being.

Juan Ángel Martínez Ochoa: "I think sustainability is something really important, and I want to continue doing better, healthier and less harmful things for our planet and for our people. ... I believe that sustainability is something really important, and I want to keep doing better things, healthier and less harmful to our planet and our people."

Overall impact

The slogan "Vaquitas Felices"(Happy Cows) guarantees customers the good treatment of animals, that is, the cows are in their natural habitat, with the ability to move freely, eat, defecate, and be taken to the trail in different places, thus obtaining a clean and much better quality meat.

In the long run, this reduction in the use of chemicals and increase in the quality of the meat will be reflected in more satisfied customers who will promote the continued consumption of this type of products, thus improving both the health and well-being of the client as well as the quality of life and death of animals used for human consumption.

On the other hand, The Food Box aims to impact society with its inclusion and employee development practices, and gradually contribute to the creation of better prepared generations, generations of leaders created in The Food Box, with tools to get out and succeed in the increasingly competitive world of work.

Business benefit

This restaurant chain makes every effort to differentiate itself from other brands and other companies, as well as influence in the best way people and our environment. Finally, it seeks to be the best hamburger place where people want to work.

Social and environmental benefit

Searching for some ways to benefit or be kind to the environment and the society that surrounds them, The Food Box has been trying to use materials that are less harmful, or completely exclude some others that they consider useless:

  • In The Food Box, there are no plastic straws due to their belief that straws are useless and extremely harmful to the environment.

  • The food containers used in most of the restaurants around the world are disposable, made of a certain kind of plastic that requires about a thousand years to decompose and disappear. But in The Food Box, even though it's about four times more expensive, they use environmentally friendly, recyclable paper boxes that decompose in a considerably shorter amount of time.

  • The Food Box is also working on the implementation of stainless steel containers to serve condiments and dressings.

  • The Food Box also seeks to impact people--not just their clients, giving them the best service and food, but also their workers, giving them fair salaries and the opportunity to rest on Sundays to be able to share with their families. Also, they want to prepare and form new leaders and give them the experience and abilities they would need in this competitive and globalized world.
