Summary

This innovation is replace diesel oil with waste oil without reduce the energy of explosive.

As my interviewee said: "Waste oil categorized as B3 Waste Class, when it can be used as raw material of explosive, we help mining company to reduce cost for B3 waste treatment and eliminate risk environment Impact."

Innovation

Mining industry requires blasting materials to break the rocks for mining and exploitation purposes. Explosives used require diesel fuel as one of the mixtures. In 1999 Dyno Nobel was challenged to make an innovation by the customer, and at that time Dyno Nobel had the initiative to replace diesel fuel with other cheaper materials but the quality or energy of the explosive material produced was maintained. Through various efforts and experiments, Dyno Nobel succeeded in replacing the use of diesel fuel with used oil. Used oil is chosen as a substitute for die-casting ingredients, for several reasons:

1. Waste oil is available in mining locations and the quantity is very abundant; in all mines using heavy equipment, used oil comes from heavy equipment (during service or maintenance).

2. The value of used oil is very small, even close to zero. Used oil categorized as B3 Waste (Toxic and Hazardous Materials). Based on regulations in Indonesia, all B3 waste is required to be processed and sent to a designated B3 Waste treatment center. To treat and transport of waste oil is very expensive.

3. The process for making B3 waste can be used as a substitute for diesel fuel is quite easy.

4. The Indonesian government (Department of Environment) is very encouraging for this initiative, and this application is a consideration to get Proper Gold. (the highest level of environmental compliance).

At present most of the mines in Indonesia have applied used oil to replace diesel fuel to mix explosives. This application can be applied also in mining throughout the world. This innovation is not patented, this innovation can be copied and used anyone and anywhere as long as meet the regional/local regulation.

The most common explosives to be used in mining industry is ANFO/Emulsion based.

Original Formula/Raw Material:

AN PRILL + FUEL OIL ------> SAFE GASES + ENERGY.

94% 6%

Modified Formula/Raw Material:

AN PRILL + Waste Oil ------> SAFE GASES + ENERGY.

Fuel oil (CH2) components can be replaced by other carbon-based raw materials (C) with certain criteria

Replacement of used fuel oil:

- Grain skin

- Sawdust / saw ash

- Used tires

- Used oil*

*) The most economical and practical in the world of mining due to simple availability and handling.

The amount of diesel fuel used in explosives is around 6% (meaning that in 1 ton of explosives, it requires 6% or 60kg of diesel fuel. At present the level of diesel fuel that can be replaced on average reaches 80%, so for 1 Ton Explosives, the amount of diesel fuel used reaches 48 kg or 56 liters.

Waste oil that can be used is:

- Machine oil

- Hydraulic oil

- Gearbox oil

Waste Oil Application to Replace Diesel Oil in Blasting

Inspiration

This innovation inspires us, that with a little effort and creativity, used materials can be used for something useful.

As my interviewee said: "It's very good innovation; saving money, save the earth to become greener, using waste to be recycled in blasting."

Regarding the reason behind this innovation is not patented, my interviewee said: "We believed that it should be used everywhere, so if we patented it, there will be hesitance on people to using it, so we just let it go"

Overall impact

Waste oil application is proven.

Currently most of mining in Indonesia are using Waste oil to replace diesel oil.

In 2010, Waste oil application has been standardized as SNI (Standard Nasional Indonesia) SNI Number: 7642.

Business benefit

As my interviewee said: "Explosives used in Indonesia reach 500,000 MT, if 50% of the total explosives used uses waste oil, then in a year it will save diesel fuel by: 50% x 500,000 MT x 6% x 80% = 12,000 MT = 14.117 KL.

If the fuel price is $0.8/L, then the saving is $11.293.600,00 per annum, that is huge saving".

Social and environmental benefit

- Less Fuel needed --> Saving money a lot.

- Reuse, reduce and recycle

- Safer treatment for Waste oil as B3 Waste.

- Hazard potential from Waste oil to the environment is eliminated.

- One of the requirements to get "Gold Proper" from government as the highest achievement for environment reward.

DNX is subsidiary of Dyno Nobel Group.

Dyno Nobel is the market leader of Explosives Company in the world. In Indonesia, Dyno Nobel has put its footprint since 1990s in the biggest coal mining company named KPC and also one of gold mining Newmont Batu Hijau. The company transformed into PT DNX Indonesia in 2006 since then, DNX shows steady growing trend by controlling 18 percent of domestic market share. supported by its product, talented people and excellence service standard.

Dyno Nobel initiated to replace diesel fuel as one of the explosive raw material with waste oil in 1999's. This innovation is proven and bring benefit to all stakeholders (mining owner, mining contractor, explosives provider).

As my interviewee said: "This innovation came from obligation from customer to provide new initiative from contractor every year, and we did it. Finally this innovation registered in SNI, so anybody can copy and duplicate this proven initiative ."
