Summary

According to figures from the United Nations Climate Change, industries related to energy production alone generated 36,300 million tons of CO2 in the world (United Nations Climate Change, 2022). In a country like Colombia, where industrial companies have an energy inefficiency of 67 % (Diario La República, Anderson Urrego, 2021) CO2 emissions associated with this inefficiency became a problem. This element is one of the main compounds of greenhouse gases that contributes to global warming (Environmental Protection Agency of the USA, 2017), which is why UPTIME ANALYTICS SAS presents an energy optimization initiative for the industrial sector. Using artificial intelligence, UPTIME proposes efficiency models with the purpose of “creating awareness of energy consumption in the industry, but with actionable awareness. "The way we do it is through advanced analytics”, commented the CEO of the company.

Innovation

UPTIME ANALYTICS S.A. is a company that provides an innovative service for the industrial sector. This service consists of the use of data analytics and artificial intelligence for the optimization of energy efficiency for the machinery of its customers. Therefore, it generates benefits such as reducing operating costs, predicting machine failures and also having an impact on society and the environment such as reducing toxic waste in terms of CO2 to the environment.

The service of the "analytical twin" as the company calls it, is developed in different phases. First, the extraction phase (Onboarding), a process of analysis and information capture on the behavior of industrial assets, which is essential for the development of the model. As the CEO of Uptime Analytics tells us "to develop an analytical twin is required to know the past and understand future possibilities, this is what we refer to as predictive analytics."

In the second step, this information travels to a cloud where the information is stored. Then it is connected to the industrial web application developed by the company that generates an analysis of the data, monitors in real time, generates intelligent alerts, and suggests savings opportunities on how the machine should behave efficiently with artificial intelligence.

Finally, the company delivers a report on a dashboard with insights for the operation, energy optimization data, failure prediction, cost reduction and carbon footprint impact reduction.

Inspiration

Oscar Hoyos is a mechanical engineer who is passionate about machinery and the industry. After graduating as a professional, he worked in different types of industries and found problems associated with the maintenance and inefficient use of companies' own resources. After several attempts to integrate data analytics and knowledge into machinery for all industries, he realized that companies do not have the knowledge and technology to manage this process. After hard work and trying to understand the needs of the sector, which seeks to optimize the use of machinery without having to replace them with new and more expensive ones, the integration of data analytics is born. Artificial intelligence optimizes the processes of each machine by entering and modifying their computer programming.

Thus, Uptime Analytics was born in response to three factors: opportunity, frustration and contribution. As CEO Oscar Hoyos tells us, “an opportunity to use artificial intelligence in industrial machinery, technology that had not been used to improve processes, a frustration, by not having reliable data in the industry for decision-making, and a contribution, a way to help the planet by contributing to the reduction of environmental impacts”

Overall impact

The company Uptime Analytics, through its energy optimization model, seeks to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. The company focuses specifically on 7, 8 and 9 and their impact in the following way:

Goal 7 Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.

The impact of this SDG points to the goal of improving energy efficiency, it aims to reduce energy use by values between 4% and 10% on average of the energy required by companies in the production of goods.

Goal 8 promotes sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

In this objective, the intention is to minimize the use of resources used for energy generation. According to data offered by the company, 135 million dollars are lost worldwide due to energy inefficiencies, that translate into more than 3.00 million tons of CO2. As explained by Oscar Hoyos Founder of UPTIME ANALYTICS S.A.S. "This amount of emissions comes not only from the generation of energy but also from the emissions generated by their use, which are avoidable since they correspond to energy inefficiency."

Goal 9 is to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.

For SDG 9, the use of resources with greater efficiency is promoted. As already mentioned in SDGs 7 and 8, the differential of technology and artificial intelligence are used to carry this out.

================================================
