Summary

CMax Systems are modular and reusable emergency shelters providing immediate housing for people who have lost their home due to natural disasters or conflict.

Innovation

CMax Systems (named in honor of Nicolas’s brother, Carlos Maximiliano) is a collection of emergency shelters that provide immediate housing for people without a home. It was created to improve the quality of life for people affected by natural catastrophes, wars, etc.

This invention, that combines the characteristics of a tarp and a trailer, consists of living shelters, sanitary units and survival kits. The modules are made of propylene, aluminum and polyester to be as environmentally responsible as possible while still being able to withstand the wear and tear of use.

The living structure consists of a rigid central structure, two wings of flexible material that unfold to quadruple the internal space and two pairs of telescopic legs that elevate the structure off the ground. Each module can be assembled by 2 people in 11 minutes without the need of tools.

The first 300 shelters that have been ordered by the UN are in production.

The many advantages of the CMax System include elevated from ground, no need for tools, wind and water resistant, easily transported and stored, easy assembly, easily cleaned and reusable.

Providing Dignity to Those in Need

Inspiration

Originally from the city of Bahia Blanca in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Nicolás Garcia Mayor obtained his undergraduate degree in industrial design and a postgraduate degree in ecological design at the National University of La Plata. For his final thesis work, he developed a system of emergency housing, the CMax System that shelters those that have been affected by natural catastrophes or conflicts.

In 2000, he founded ar estudio, a design firm dedicated to solving problems interdisciplinary and with a focus on environmental responsibility, humanitarian aid and an organic aesthetic.

Overall impact

This emergency housing system would serve not only to palliate the effects of natural and human made disasters but would also be a life-guard for the more than 50 million refugees around the world that have been rendered homeless because of conflicts.
