Summary

Kain Perca (Patchwork) is a leftover fabric from the sewing process. At first glance these are cloth fabric remnants that do not have benefits, but in fact the rest of this fabric can be harnessed into a useful product. Rather than waste, it is better used in more useful items. This patchwork can be utilized as handicraft items such as bags, pillowcases, or other products.

This business is engaged in the domestic industry, basically established aims for profit as well as to meet the requirement or consumer demand for a high-quality product. While the creation of good quality at low cost is a major requirement if they want profits increased.

Innovation

Craft patchwork is one craft that is part of the world of sewing. This craft is made by using materials that are categorized as waste, which is an assortment of patchwork. This cloth is used to make a beautiful craftwork and even has high artistic value.

The trick is to cut up the diverse fabric remnants into various shapes, and then combine the pieces to sew it back. Of course, a mix of colors and fabric patterns should also be considered in order to create a beautiful patchwork craft.

After sorting the Patchwork (Kain Perca) then Pak Suherman sends them to the sewers, who are local people surrounding his house. From 2003-2017, the number of sewers grew to 1,600 sewers who are located in 4 districts (Kecamatan). Most of the sewers use semi-automatic sewing machines, a versatile sewing machine which has a wide range of facilities, and the machine is driven by electric motors. This machine has a facility that is more complete than manual sewing machines. Thus, this machine is only used to sew straight, and also can sew setikan assorted ornaments.

Besides that, the sewing machine is also equipped with a wide range of sewing shoes with various functions. This sewing machine is said to be semi-automatic due to manufacturing various kinds of decorative setikan still require equipment (cam) which are in accordance with the desired motif.

The business model allows people to train and practice sewing. Pak Suherman created almost 13 new entrepreneurs in the same business model with him and he coaches them until they can survive to run their business and become independent business men/women. Pak Suherman created non-use product (Kain Perca) and reproduces it to become a useful and high-value product. Pak Suherman also created a stable supply chain from supplying the raw material (Kain Perca) textile industry (in Bandung, Palembang) and keeping the market stable, and growth, approximately for one day he sends to his customers almost 1,000 pieces of new product such as pillow cases (sarung bantal), bed sheets (Kain sprei), etc.

Inspiration

Pak Suherman started this business in 2001. Before that he was a factory worker in Tangerang city, and he decided to migrate to Lampung city (his hometown). For the first time he built this business, it was very hard to get a loan from the bank, from time to time, with persistence he developed this business and created markets from Lampung city, Palembang city, and Aceh. With empowering almost 1,600 local people in 4 districts in Kabupaten Pringsewu Lampung Province, in 2012 he got an award from Pak Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (President of Indonesia) in Istana Kepresidenan Jakarta because of his willingness to build business with high impact for communities in 4 districts (Kecamatan) and increase Lampung province economic growth. Because of his contribution for communities, he was also chosen as Head of Desa Sukamulya (Kepala Desa) for two periods. One of his dreams is the products that are produced from waste of textile factory can be exported to Southeast Asia.

Overall impact

With this business model, Pak Suherman has empowered the community and brought benefit and created new extra earning for local residents. This business has empowered almost 1,600 people in 4 districts (Kecamatan). The local people (sewers) will have extra earning approximately Rp 2million/month.
