Summary

The President of the Jiangtian Hotel, Jihua Cui, created a green food product environment in the hotel restaurant so the customers can stay healthy and don't need to leave the hotel to eat organic green meals. Recycling the kitchen's waste also saves the hotel money and serves the environment.

Innovation

When the hotel's president, Jihua Cui, took over the Shang Hai Jiangtian Hotel, he found that people who stay in the hotel like to visit restaurants near the hotel. So, he started to pay attention to the quality of the food being served at the hotel so that customers could eat safely and healthy green food without having to leave the hotel. Jihua leveraged his contact of a friend who is a farmer in the countryside. He worked with his friend to develop green and organic food products for hotel customers. After their meal, hotel customers are also have the opportunity to buy green healthy food to take back home so that they can cook organic food at their own house. The hotel gains financial benefits from selling green food.

Jihua also observed that the kitchen of hotel threw away the left over food every day and he realized how wasteful this was. He developed a machine which can compact and dry 200 kg of garbage and turn it into 5kg of fertilizer. The remaining liquid garbage becomes purified water and goes into the sewer.

The Green Life in the Hotel

Inspiration

Recently, people have started to pursue the green life. Jihua told me that "I used to live in the countryside when I was child. After I had a few jobs, I had to move to the city. I really miss the fresh air and green food directly from the farm. So I hope people that live in the city also can eat green and organic food as the countryside does and my children also can eat healthy food." Because of his changes to his hotel's restaurant, hotel customers can eat high-quality green food in the hotel; they no longer need to go outside the hotel to eat.

Jihua thinks the hotel needs to be responsible and recycle the kitchen waste so they do not contribute to polluting the environment. Now the Jiangtian Hotel is turning waste into treasure and is environmentally friendly. The fertilizer can be used to grow the flowers and the grass that help beautify the hotel.

Overall impact

Jihua created a green food product environment in the hotel restaurant so his customers can stay healthy and eat the organic food they want. The company recycles the kitchen waste and saves the hotel money while being environmentally conscious.

Business benefit

· People like to visit a restaurant in the hotel rather than near the hotel.

· Jihua’s friend who lives in the countryside and sells organic produce to the hotel also reaps business benefits.

Social and environmental benefit

Living the 'green life' is a new fashion in China, so people who work in city like taking trips to the countryside on the weekend. The Jiangtian Hotel, through the innovations of its president, Jihua Cui and his partnership with an organic farmer found a good way to facilitate city people staying healthy without leaving the city by bringing organic green food to the Jiangtian Hotel's restaurant. The hotel also sells hotel guests green produce that they can take back home with them. The hotel company also recycles the restaurant's food waste so they do not pollute the air and water. And the recycled food waste is used as fertilizer, thereby saving money for the company.
