Sediment buildup in waterways is a common source of water pollution and increases the risk of bank erosion and flooding. Kurtz Bros., in collaboration with Streamside Technology, partnered with the Port Authority of Cleveland to decrease sediment deposition in the Cuyahoga River. A sediment collector was installed to trap sediment before it enters the navigation channel downstream. It utilizes the natural energy of the water flow and essentially works as a speed bump with grates collecting any sediment above 0.25mm. The sediment is then pumped out and run through a sand screw which separates the water and deposits the sands. This has helped decrease dredging and kept the economically vital shipping channels open in Cleveland, Ohio, In addition, Kurtz Bros. sells processed sediment as raw material used in construction projects around the state.
